The Role:
The role is responsible for managing general accounting processes within the organization. This involves implementing and enforcing accounting policies and procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy and adherence to standards, managing and maintaining the chart of accounts, reviewing journal entries and allocations, and managing accounts payable and receivable.
Further, the role entails managing intercompany transactions, general ledger reconciliations, and in period end close processes.
Finally, the role requires overseeing the preparation of accounting reports for internal and external stakeholders, and staying updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies on accounting processes, identifying and recommending improvements for enhanced efficiency to senior management.
* A key member of the UK Financial Control team, supporting the Financial Controller in delivering accurate, timely, and high-quality financial information.
* Overseeing financial reporting (internal and external), compliance (including internal controls and audit), and team supervision, whilst also deputising for the Financial Controller when required.
* Manage the Accounts Payable function to ensure purchase to payable process has robust controls, operates effectively, and pays on time.
* Support and manage junior team members in both their day to day work, and career progression (including managing study support).
* Implementation and maintenance of best practice internal controls, including roll out and training where appropriate.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Implements and enforces policies and procedures to perform general accounting processes and ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with accounting standards.
2. Manages and maintains the chart of accounts in the organization's accounting system, adopting proper categorization and organization of financial data to enable accurate financial reporting and analysis;
3. Reviews journal entries and allocations, ensuring all financial transactions are correctly recorded in the company's accounting system;
4. Manages accounts payable, ensuring appropriate and accurate records of bills and invoices to suppliers and vendors and their prompt payment;
5. Manages accounts receivable, ensuring appropriate and accurate records of customer payments and prompt collection of outstanding invoices;
6. Manages intercompany transaction processing and reconciliation to provide consistency across all entities;
7. Manages general ledger reconciliations, ensuring accounts are in balance and accurate and addressing any identified discrepancies and errors in financial data;
8. Manages in period end close processes, reviewing final financial data and resolving any discrepancies and errors to ensure accurate and complete development of financial statements;
9. Oversees the generation of accounting reports / schedules for internal audiences and / or external audiences, including consolidation of financial statements, cash flow reporting, budget reporting;
10. Monitors industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies on accounting processes, identifying and recommending innovative solutions to streamline accounting procedures and improve performance.
Month and year end responsibilities:
* Ensure month and year end management accounting tasks are completed accurately and on a timely basis, including balance sheet reconciliations, KPI's, and monthly account review preparations.
* Manage statutory reporting and external audit coordination
* Manage finance staff and ensure timely completion of tasks
* Maintain and improve financial controls and procedures, including quarterly control sign off with Directors, along with proposals to improve.
* Oversee VAT and other regulatory submissions
* Providing cover for payroll as required
Stakeholder Management:
* Support budget holders with financial analysis and reporting
* Contribute to the development of financial systems, ERP platforms, and transformation projects
* Provide training and guidance to finance and non-finance stakeholders
* Line Management responsibilities for Accounts Payable and Assistant Accountants
Ad Hoc Accounting tasks:
* Other ad hoc and regular tasks / reporting as required by the Management Accountant/ Financial Controller/ FD/ HQ
You will work with various departments with the company including HQ, so communication is key at all levels. There are two direct reports.
ESSENTIAL Skills and qualifications needed include:
Qualifications
Qualified accountant 2 years PQE (e.g. ACA, ACCA or CIMA)
Skills
Strong technical knowledge of financial reporting
Experience in managing audits and preparing statutory accounts
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a solution focussed mind-set
Proficiency in financial systems and experience of SAP computer software (desired but not essential)
