Job Description
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Cataloguing Manager to join our team.
This is a wonderful, full-time, permanent role at Eames Fine Art. The successful candidate will manage all artworks in the Eames Fine Art Collection, including cataloguing and condition-checking new works as they arrive at the studio, and working with our Digital Manager to ensure each piece is accurately photographed. The role also involves providing collection information to the team ahead of exhibitions and events, liaising with artists to make sure works arrive on time, and overseeing artwork storage. This includes keeping drawers tidy and ensuring artworks are stored safely and appropriately for their medium.
The Cataloguing Manager is fully or partly responsible for:
Recording details of each new work, including size, edition, condition, and availability.
Researching artworks, including provenance, history, relevance, comparative prices, and context.
Taking, editing, and filing photographs.
Managing artwork storage and updating portfolios, presentation sleeves, browsers, and viewing boxes at the studio and galleries.
Refreshing artist inventories by running stock checks, liaising with artists and studios, sometimes off-site, and arranging returns and regular replenishment of stock.
Supporting directors in researching, locating, and purchasing new stock.
Supporting the sales team by sharing information about new works and availability through verbal updates and written communication.
Preparing and installing artwork labels ahead of events and exhibitions.
Working with the team to manage framing specifications, pricing, and timelines.
Advising colleagues on artwork condition when needed and identifying when conservation support may be required. Knowledge of conservation is desirable but not essential.
Working with Directors to organise the Studio and Atelier spaces as efficiently as possible for storage, exhibitions, and events.
Liaising with the artists’ estates we work with, including occasional off-site visits to advise on and catalogue collections.
We are a small team, so everyone is expected to take on wider responsibilities, including caring for the spaces and helping to plan exhibitions. Clients visit regularly, and everyone on site should be able to speak with them confidently, show artworks, and support their purchasing decisions. At times, you may be asked to cover the front desk in the galleries and to work at evening events at the gallery and Collectors’ Studio, so you should be comfortable discussing art with clients.
You
We are looking for someone with experience in a similar role and a genuine passion for fine art. You should have a strong eye for detail, excellent record-keeping skills, and a commitment to accuracy and organisation. You should be able to work quickly without compromising quality and understand that accurate stock information is essential to the business. You will need to be proficient in Excel and databases. We are looking for a collaborative team member who is happy to work with directors on projects, support colleagues with upcoming events, encourage assistants and interns, and share knowledge and enthusiasm with clients.
About Working at Eames Fine Art
Eames Fine Art is an established commercial gallery in SE1, operating across four venues. We specialise in original prints from every period, from Rembrandt to Hockney and from Rego to Emin, and we work with an outstanding group of contemporary printmakers.
Alongside art fairs, Eames Fine Art hosts regular exhibitions, talks, auctions, and special events at our Collectors’ Studio.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a skilled, hardworking, and passionate team. We work closely together, so strong communication is essential to the smooth running of the business. Each day begins with a morning meeting over coffee to discuss priorities, plans and opportunities.
We have an excellent reputation and pride ourselves on providing a personal, attentive service. We make every effort to meet clients in person and understand their collecting interests and tastes. Our exhibition and events calendar is busy, with a fast pace of activity.
Because we specialise in original prints, we manage a high volume of artworks and need broad knowledge across many styles, periods, and artists.
We want the Eames brand to feel relaxed and make art accessible to everyone. Our venues should be welcoming and comfortable, which means they must also be smart, clean, well ordered, and above all organised. Everyone on the team is expected to maintain a professional and friendly approach.
It is also important to remember that we are a commercial gallery. We run many high-content client events, including talks, films, discussions, and generous hospitality. Although these events are enjoyable and relaxed, they are ultimately funded by artwork sales. Everything we plan, organise, and host should support that goal. Our priority in every decision is to make buying art appealing, enjoyable, and straightforward.
