Please note appointment will be made at Band 5 or Band 5Annex 21 dependant on qualifications and experience.

As a Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will be required to work within professional standards expected as a registrant of the Health Professions Council (HCPC) and maintain a portfolio of evidence supporting Continuing Professional development (CPD). Duties as a BMS will include performing a range of scientific procedures involving the processing of specimens to contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and investigation of pathological processes.

The post holder will be required to conform to agreed standard operational procedures, policies and good laboratory practice and also within their work duties, comply with the standards as required of UKAS and other relevant professional and Legislative Bodies (e.g. HTA, BSQR).

To demonstrate commitment and dedication to our staff we have a flexible recruitment and progression plan that consists of:

* Band 5 Annex 21 for candidates with IBMS accredited degree who have not completed their IBMS Generic Training Portfolio with advancement to Band 5 on registration.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to work on a rotational basis through the different sections of the department, and may be required to work on any site within the Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board (BCULHB) area to enable continuity of service.

On completion of the necessary competence requirements, Band 6 post holders will be required to cover 24/7 out of hours service working as a registered scientist to deliver safe and effective specialist emergency and core testing services requiring the post holder to :

* Support and advise laboratory support worker colleagues.
* Prioritise investigations in accordance to clinical need, ensuring optimum turnaround for urgent requests.
* Manage emergency requests, single or multiple.
* Liaise with IT and specialist equipment suppliers to resolve system or equipment failures.
* To respond to Major incident procedures should the need arise.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* IBMS accredited Biomedical Sciences Degree or other qualification acceptable for future HCPC registration.
* State registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
* Able to provide evidence of ongoing personal development


Experience

* Experience of automated and manual laboratory investigations and procedures (sufficient post registration training).
* Experience of analytical platforms used in BCUHB.
* General familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft Office)
* Previous NHS experience
* Experience of working in out of hours service


Skills

* Ability to supervise others
* Ability to pick up techniques quickly following a training program.
* Good verbal and written communication skills
* Good interpersonal skills
* Good organisational skills
* Welsh speaking

* Ability to work without supervision and as part of a team
* Ability to work under pressure and ability to assess & prioritise work in a pressured environment
* Ability to make specialist scientific decisions when working alone / as lone scientist in response to clinical situation and using specialist scientific knowledge & experience


Knowledge

* Specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures as evidenced by attaining IBMS specialist portfolio
* Knowledge of quality control and assurance
* Knowledge of managing emergency requests
* Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Accreditation requirements
* Knowledge of Laboratory Information management systems
