Responsibilities
* Engage in complex health assessments as appropriate, planning care in partnership with service users and other professionals, including specialist assessment of complex nursing needs.
* Develop, implement and evaluate care plans with service users, carers and other professionals, ensuring all parties receive a copy and that information is recorded on trust IT systems.
* Assist service users in meeting personal care needs such as bathing and washing as outlined in the care plan; interventions may be delegated where appropriate.
* Liaise with and offer specialist assessment and advice to other agencies and professions, and participate in Multi‑Agency meetings to offer advice and facilitate ongoing treatment and care of clients in line with National Service Framework guidelines.
* Support service users in medication management within a concordance framework; administer medication, including intramuscular injections and depot medication, monitor side effects, and delegate checking and delivery where appropriate.
* Conduct mental and behavioural state examinations for own service users and newly admitted patients, repeating on at least a weekly basis with clinical risk assessment and management plans.
* Take charge of the ward in the absence of senior staff, overseeing clinical, environmental and managerial aspects, shift coordination, resource allocation, staff deployment, and maintenance of a safe environment in accordance with the Mental Health Act.
* Contribute positively to the operational management of the team, including night and weekend responsibilities for hospital‑wide issues such as bed management, staff deployment and fire coordination.
* Implement daily safety assessments and management plans.
* Participate in staff recruitment, appraisal and supervision, induction of junior staff, and assessment of work‑based studies such as NVQs.
* Contribute to the planning and delivery of teaching sessions for the multidisciplinary team and external agencies, including mandatory training and transfer of specialist knowledge.
* Lead service development and quality initiatives in line with local and national policies, using audit and policy development to ensure sufficient time for clinical and managerial supervision, workload management, and quality improvement under the Government Modernisation Programme.
* Ensure the therapeutic programme over a seven‑day period is developed and outcomes are demonstrated through audit and evaluation of evidence‑based practice.
* Provide mentorship and preceptorship to junior nurses, nurses in training and other team members, ensuring training objectives are met.
