Job Introduction

The successful individual will lead a modern .NET software capability in the UK, manage several technical teams across the bank, provide technical strategic direction, improve ways of working with UK and Group teams, and support the move of digital offerings onto the Cloud.

The successful individual will need to collaborate with key stakeholders in all areas of the business to achieve this. In addition, the bank is looking to move to a modern agile mindset and way of operating, so the right individual will also be able to influence and shape that transition.

Main Responsibilities

* Own the quality of application design, selecting the right technologies to create highly performant, stable, large‑scale, micro‑services‑based, cloud‑based applications.
* Act as a counterpart to the digital product owner, jointly own the backlog of work.
* Take technical ownership of UK .NET development and oversee all technical work.
* Ensure adherence to IT development controls and standards.
* Own and manage platform risks and governance.
* Provide input into technical buy‑vs‑build decisions and ensure they align with our modernisation strategy.
* Ensure that we safely and securely incorporate third‑party solutions and/or Group solutions into our digital offerings.
* Evaluate technical efficiency, and be able to discuss long‑term costs, time to market, and technical debt.
* Ensure all products and services are supported by excellent third‑line support.
* Stay up to date with latest digital technology trends and bring them to bear in our system designs.
* Enable teams to be accountable for their own testing, ensuring testing happens fast, frequently and effectively.
* Ensure security is built into the development process.
* Participate in code reviews with the team, pair‑programming exercises where appropriate.
* Support a move to a DevOps culture when required.

Delivery Aspects

* Own technical aspects of delivery for our payments and core banking touchpoints.
* Enhance existing agile ways of working, optimising delivery throughput for your teams, marrying with Waterfall when necessary.
* Through continuous improvement, drive technical operational excellence across the organisation.

People Leadership of the UK .NET Teams

* Line‑manage, mentor and coach .NET engineers.
* Build, continuously develop and lead a modern software capability across multiple teams.
* Ensure best practice is shared across teams and empower the teams to drive change themselves.
* Provide structured performance reviews to support ongoing professional development within development teams.
* Convert department‑level objectives into key results for your team.
* Actively promote and ensure adherence to the Bank's Risk Management framework (including sub‑frameworks) and relevant risk and compliance policies and procedures, ensuring timely and appropriate escalation of concerns to senior stakeholders.

Ideal Candidate

* Extensive experience of product engineering and delivery, of which at least 2 years should be in a people‑leadership role.
* 5+ years of hands‑on experience working in .NET and experience of cloud‑native app product development, database, build pipeline and networking technologies.
* Demonstrable experience of Agile and of leading and scaling distributed autonomous engineering teams across remote locations.
* Ability to work well in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment and to pick up new skill sets quickly.
* Track record of delivering well‑engineered solutions using modern technologies.
* Experience running engineering teams over a sustained period and can demonstrate excellent leadership across technology domains such as development, quality, support, architecture and integration.
* Experienced in product development life cycles and working in a Lean and Agile way.
* Can think and act strategically, as well as recognising when to act tactically and operationally.
* Active member of the broader technology community with an understanding of current leading trends.
* You are a people leader who can inspire and grow talent.
* You understand how to influence others and how to build collaborative, productive relationships with your peers.
