Job overview

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for an experienced Haematology nurse who is interested in a role within the Haematology team at the Luton hospital site. The prime function of this role is to provide clinical expertise in supporting and delivering high standards of nursing care to patients with haematological conditions and supporting their families/carers. The post holder will work with the team to support nurse led follow up clinics for required Haematology patients. They will be responsible for supporting the continuous improvement of quality of services and safeguarding high standards of care by sustaining an environment in which excellence in clinical care can flourish.

Main duties of the job

Support the Haematology consultant and nursing team with inpatient and outpatient caseloads.
Assist with the development of clinical services within the specialised field.
Assist to develop and work within agreed protocols.
Provide specialist, expert clinical knowledge to colleagues, patients, carers and relatives.
Act as an advocate for patients.
Liaise, guide and advise the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies as appropriate.
Work closely with Day Unit and the Oncology team, co-ordinating safe patient care.
To organise own work and practice, taking a flexible approach to ensure support for patients and colleagues.
Be responsible for a caseload of Haematology patients and act as their key worker, attending specialist MDTs to provide relevant information.
Support nurse led clinics for Haematology patients and provide them with the necessary education, support and clinical management plan.
Responsible for assessing patients physical, psychological and social needs and signposting them to the relevant networks.
Respond to unpredictable clinical events and take the necessary corrective action.
Take responsibility for one’s own development, undertaking appropriate activities to update clinical knowledge and skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, providing specialist advice and actively seeking evidence based practice which will improve the quality of care and meet the needs of a delegated group of patients. A holistic approach to caring should be planned that will include the appropriate level of physiological, pathological, spiritual, socio- economic and cultural aspects which influence the care of clients within your specific speciality.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse, with degree or equivalent level of experience

Desirable criteria

2. Post -registration qualification in specialist area (haemato-oncology course)
3. Non-medical Prescriber
4. Non-Medical Prescriber of blood products
5. Teaching and assessing qualification
6. Advanced communication skills

Experience

Essential criteria

7. The relevant clinical experience
8. Experience of working within an MDT
9. Up to date and evidenced based knowledge of current clinical and professional issues

Desirable criteria

10. The relevant clinical experience in cancer related area
11. Previous NHS experience
12. Experience of working with Haematology patients
13. Participation in service development and implementation of change
14. Experience of developing and undertaking audit

Knowledge

Essential criteria

15. Excellent oral and written communication skill
16. Able to analyse data and provide written reports
17. Excellent understanding and awareness of confidentiality
18. Confidence in own knowledge base and understanding of when to seek guidance

Desirable criteria

19. Previous experience and knowledge of working within haematology
