Diagnostic Radiographer

We are looking for a highly skilled and dedicated diagnostic radiographer to join the X‑ray department at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The role delivers exceptional radiography for Musculoskeletal Radiologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons and our specialised bone tumour team.
Responsibilities
1. Perform general and highly specialised radiographic procedures, ensuring high professional standards and applying ALARA principles within IR(ME)R guidelines.
2. Participate in 24‑hour on‑call and standby services as allocated.
3. Organise, plan and prioritise workload according to clinical need without supervision.
4. Coordinate inpatient workload with portering, nursing and doctor staff, adjusting plans when personnel are unavailable.
5. Adjust work patterns when outpatient demand from clinics exceeds expectations.
6. Lead the multidisciplinary team in theatre, advising on radiation protection and ensuring all members are adequately protected; exclude pregnant staff.
7. Supervise, support, and train student radiographers, nursing staff and other staff as appropriate.
8. Participate in the training of student radiographers on placement at the hospital.
9. Maintain familiarity with all X‑ray equipment and systems operated within the department.
10. Maintain and update patient records.
11. Monitor patients for adverse reactions and respond promptly.
12. Suggest and implement service improvements based on evidence‑based practice and audit.
13. Maintain accurate equipment records and report faults to the Superintendent or deputy.
14. Perform daily, weekly and monthly equipment tests for quality assurance, recording results for the Radiation Protection Service.
15. Uphold patient confidentiality at all times.
16. Undertake CPD training and study to maintain professional knowledge.
17. Be competent in all specialised projections and train other staff in these techniques.
18. Enter patient data in departmental computer systems to enable access to attendance and reports.
19. Assess patient fitness and ability to comply before manipulating them into position to obtain diagnostic radiographs, adapting techniques for disabilities or pathologies.
20. Empathise, persuade, negotiate with, and provide reassurance to patients, particularly those with spinal cord injury, tumour or children. Advise on radiation dose and effects.
21. Ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities when moving on.
22. Participate in ongoing research projects and follow research protocols for imaging procedures.
23. Modify departmental protocols to keep radiation dose to a minimum.
24. Monitor and maintain stock in own area.
Qualifications, Training & Experience
* BSc in Diagnostic Radiography and Medical Imaging or equivalent.
* Evidence of continuous personal and professional development.
* Experience at the radiography grade within an NHS hospital.
* Experience with specialist orthopaedic procedures, x‑ray and fluoroscopic imaging.
* Experience with theatre radiography, particularly orthopaedics.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to respond to challenging and difficult situations with a forward‑thinking approach.
* Ability to think methodically and creatively.
* Experience manoeuvring equipment within controlled sterile environments.
* Ability to manage own workload and build working relationships quickly.
* Ability to work seamlessly with surgeons and visualise resultant image.
* Experience supervising radiography students and HCAs.
* Commitment to Clinical Governance and quality.
* HCPC registration.
Knowledge
* High‑quality diagnostic image production with attention to detail and accuracy.
* Safe operation within controlled environments with awareness of radiation and dose (ALARP).
* Adaptation of techniques based on clinical condition.
* Participation in departmental QA testing.
* Conformance to IR(ME)R at all times; confidence in protecting patients from unnecessary radiation.
* Ability to act as practitioner and operator, challenging unjustified requests.
