Senior Software Engineer – DWP Digital

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our community of tech experts. You will work with leading‑edge technology and fresh ideas to design, build and maintain applications that support government standards and user needs.
Key Skills, Knowledge and Experience
* Strong proficiency in Java and COBOL: Proven experience developing and maintaining enterprise‑level applications and integrating legacy systems.
* Leadership and mentoring: Ability to manage and guide development teams, promote best practices and foster a high‑performing culture.
* Agile delivery and problem‑solving: Skilled in multidisciplinary agile teams, handling time‑critical incidents and delivering user‑focused solutions.
* Effective communication and collaboration: Capable of explaining technical decisions to varied audiences and working closely with architects, stakeholders and delivery managers.
As a Senior Software Engineer at DWP Digital you’ll lead high‑impact software projects, design and maintain applications, drive continuous improvement and manage development workflows using tools like Jira. Your responsibilities span legacy system transformation, new feature development and critical incident support, while mentoring engineers and shaping architectural decisions.
Location & Hybrid Working
You’ll join one of our digital hubs across the UK – Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle‑upon‑Tyne or Sheffield – whichever is most convenient for you. We work a hybrid model: 40 % remote at home and 60 % face‑to‑face in a hub.
Pay & Benefits
Competitive pay of up to £78,517.
Pension: £19,758 per year (28.97 % employer contribution).
Holidays: 26 days rising to 31 days over time. Up to 3 extra days off per month on flexi‑time. Public holidays included.
