The Royal Television Society is looking for a news editor for its flagship magazine, Television. Published 10 times a year in print and digital versions, Television highlights the best new shows and the talent that makes them, and offers in-depth coverage of current media debates. It also reports on RTS events and awards from around the UK and Ireland.
Your role is to cover RTS news, events, premieres and awards ceremonies in the magazine. Principally, this will involve commissioning, writing and editing stories for the news pages of Television.
You will be expected to attend in person and contribute ideas at monthly magazine editorial meetings, and proof the magazine as a whole. Some design skills are preferable, ideally a working knowledge of InDesign software.
The RTS is the UK and Ireland’s leading forum for television and related media. The RTS – through Television, its website and digital content – is a hub for TV-related news and features.
Key responsibilities
* Commission journalists to report RTS events around the UK and Ireland
* Write news stories on events and awards, the Society’s educational activities, interview TV talent and execs, and pen obituaries
* Liaise with the RTS regions, building strong working relationships with centre chairs and their events coordinators/administrators
* Edit news stories
* Source photos to accompany stories, working closely with the magazine’s designer
* Attend and contribute in person to editorial/proofing meetings
* Proof the magazine as a whole
Essential skills
* A love of television
* The ability to write accurate, concise, interesting copy
* Experience of writing and editing news for a magazine/newspaper
* Experience of commissioning journalists
* Good communication skills to build relationships with colleagues, RTS officials around the country, journalists and publicists
* Flexibility – the workflow is uneven within a month and between issues
Desired but not essential
* Knowledge of the television industry
* A knowledge of InDesign
