About the role
As the Chargehand, you will deal with all the day-to-day activities related to the mechanical/engineering team servicing and maintaining the fleet of vehicles, and you will be an essential link to the Fleet Maintenance Manager in ensuring the efficiency of the workshop.
What will you be doing?
* Monitor the daily running of the depot and all engineering staff, supervising in the absence of the Workshop Planner and Engineering Supervisor.
* Lead on shift with all IT systems, support staff, and ensure all diagnostic equipment is operational.
* Perform in-process checks on staff to ensure quality and adherence to company policies.
* Carry out repairs and diagnostics on vehicles as required.
* Fully comply with all HS&E legislation and First Group policies.
* Provide guidance to other staff as needed.
* Allocate planned and unplanned work to engineering staff.
* Manage labour overtime within set authorisation limits, as directed by the Engineering Manager.
* Update the engineering vehicle status board and daily garage log to reflect any changes.
* Liaise with the operations department to handle changeovers and breakdowns effectively to minimise lost mileage.
* In the absence of the Cleaning Supervisor, oversee vehicle cleaning, fuelling, oil checks, and parking.
* Process vehicle defect cards following engineering SOPs.
* Take digital photographs of vehicles involved in third-party incidents as required, following SOPs.
Working Shift Patterns: 39 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 19:00 - 02:36 hrs
Who are we looking for?
* Minimum Level 3 NVQ or equivalent (e.g., City & Guilds Level 1 & 2) in Vehicle Repair (HGV/LGV, car, or van).
* Fully conversant with workshop equipment operation and safety.
* Experienced with IT systems and diagnostics.
* Possession or ability to obtain a full PCV licence and forklift truck licence if required.
* Full driving licence.
