Job Description:
We seek a talented post-doctoral scientist to carry out research to better understand the predictability of subpolar North Atlantic tipping points. This is a full-time, fixed-term position up to 30 months, available to start immediately.
Tipping points, where the climate system undergoes rapid and potentially irreversible changes, are among the most uncertain and impactful consequences of warming climate. The North Atlantic subpolar gyre and the Greenland Ice Sheet are suspected tipping points that could drastically alter European weather. However, there is significant uncertainty in the processes leading to these tipping points and their predictability.
Your role will involve using statistical and physical models to enhance understanding of the predictability of these tipping points, identifying key regions and variables, and studying the physical processes affecting them within earth system models.
Qualifications include:
* A PhD or expected shortly in mathematical or physical sciences
* Strong analytical skills and self-motivation
* Experience analyzing climate model outputs or similar datasets
* Ability to collaborate effectively with team members
The position is based at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, Department of Meteorology, within the PROMOTE project funded by ARIA. Candidates must be based in Reading for the contract duration.
Applicants should include a cover letter expressing their interest and motivation.
The university values diversity and inclusion, supports gender and race equality, and champions LGBT+ and disability inclusion. Applications for flexible working are encouraged and will be considered.
