A position is available in the Histopathology Department, offering an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated team working in a busy, modern teaching hospital laboratory. The department handles approximately 80,000 surgical requests annually and provides a broad spectrum of routine and specialized services.
This role provides an excellent chance to work within a committed team of office staff, laboratory personnel, and Consultant Pathologists. The department promotes active professional development and further educational activities. It includes Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection and reporting roles, utilizes digital pathology reporting, and employs the CEREBRO specimen tracking system, with ongoing upgrades to laboratory equipment.
We welcome applications from graduates with an IBMS-accredited biomedical sciences degree. Candidates will need to complete the IBMS registration portfolio and HCPC registration to qualify for a BMS role.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will play a key role in:
* Working as a BMS across all laboratory sections.
* Performing section cutting, embedding, special staining, immunohistochemistry, and work in the specimen reception/dissection room.
* Carrying out frozen sections and Mohs frozen sections.
* Assisting with staff training, quality control, and equipment maintenance/troubleshooting.
* Supporting lab projects and development initiatives.
* Conducting audits.

Job responsibilities
* Communicating routine clinical and technical information to colleagues, managers, and patients.
* Participating in departmental meetings and ensuring effective communication.
* Responding to inquiries from pathology users and patients about methodologies and services.
* Managing own workload under supervision, escalating issues as needed.
* Processing urgent and routine work to meet turnaround times.
* Dissecting specimens, assigning codes, and managing sample reception and processing.
* Ensuring correct patient identification and following quality/error procedures.
* Performing histological techniques, including fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
* Assisting pathologists during specimen dissection and maintaining a clean work environment.
* Macroscopic examination and description of biopsy samples following guidelines.

Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
