Graduate aerospace modelling engineer

Modelling engineer

Offer description

Moving the state of the art forward in aerospace engineering requires lots of experimentation to characterise how materials behave under extreme conditions; however, there comes a point when experiments become unfeasible and the only way forward is computational physics.

Joining a specialised team working on the leading edge of aerospace science, you would carry out modelling of complex scenarios characterised by high temperatures, pressures, and velocities. You will be responsible for setting up and running scenarios under investigation, and using your aerospace and materials knowledge to identify any artifacts within the data resulting from limitations of the model. Your remit will also involve preparation and presentation of results and papers, and communication with clients, so you will need to be a confident communicator.

To succeed in this role you will need to be academically bright with an excellent understanding of computational fluid dynamics or finite element modelling techniques, shock physics, and the properties of aerospace materials such as metals, composites, and ceramics. It's highly likely that your degree will be in aerospace engineering or possibly mechanical engineering.

You will need:

1. A strong academic background: at minimum of a 2.1 degree in Aerospace Engineering or similar from a well-ranked university, with strong pre-university grades (A*s and As at A-level).
2. An excellent understanding of computational fluid dynamics, finite element modelling, and associated areas such as multiphysics, compressible, chemically reactive, or turbulent flows, shock physics, or hydrocode modelling.
3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
4. As you may be involved in government projects, you must be a UK national (with no other nationality) residing in the UK for the past 5 years. Projects will span civil and defence aerospace applications, and you will need to be comfortable working within either domain.

This is a great opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team solving problems that can't be tackled experimentally, and help bring to life advanced technologies for applications such as space, maritime, and defence.

This role is based on the south coast, and features a competitive salary, benefits package (including a generous holiday allowance), and training opportunities. There is scope for up to two days a week working remotely where tasks permit.
