Role Overview
The Day Shift Manager – Depot owns morning depot execution, ensuring the site is fully ready for dispatch, processes run to SLA, and no operational debt is passed forward.
The role is accountable for Day Under‑Roof performance, including handover from Night Shift, staging, dispatch readiness, exception handling, and early stability, while supporting driver launch where required. Accountable for service, cost, safety, and people performance at shift + DSP level.
This is a hands‑on, floor‑led role with real‑time decision‑making responsibility, focused on safety, flow, quality, and execution discipline.
Responsibilities
- Lead morning depot execution, ensuring the site is fully ready for dispatch, processes run to SLA, and no operational debt is passed forward:
- Validate Night Shift handover and close gaps immediately.
- Coordinate handlers in the right activities, monitoring productivity and coaching quality.
- Train new handlers in the required tasks and ensure they have the right working equipment.
- Manage process exceptions: damages, perishables, missorts, left‑behinds.
- Handle late returns and required scans into the correct locations.
- Lead daytime arrivals management and sortation activities.
- Support night sortation activities:
- Check and prepare night shift capacity based on forecast updates.
- Ensure any further truck arrivals updates will be reflected in shift bookings for night shift.
- Inform Ops Manager on any potential capacity risk for the night based on shift uptake.
- Ensure area readiness: yard, staging, belts, locations, devices.
- Handle exceptions: left‑behinds, missorts, damages, perishables.
- Maintain asset and equipment readiness.
- Prepare and support routing/dispatch for RC2 where applicable.
- Operate in line with depot safety standards. Report unsafe conditions, defects, or near misses immediately.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and highlight potential process improvements.
- Maintain safety, standards, and productivity discipline.
Requirements
- 2–4 years’ experience operating in fast‑paced depot, warehouse, or other operational roles.
- Strong attention to detail and execution discipline.
- Some shift leadership and people management experience.
- High urgency, strong communication, and strong escalation habits.
- Comfortable solving real‑time operational pressure during peak windows.
- Able to communicate effectively, build relationships, and work cross‑functionally.
