Overview
A Vacancy at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthesia to join the expanding East Kent Critical Care team at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust.
Joining the department offers a rewarding role with opportunities for professional development, research and teaching, plus a supportive lifestyle. The Trust is investing heavily in its Critical Care Units over the next 12 months and would welcome you to be part of this program.
About the role
As a GMC-registered Consultant, you will play a vital role in a progressive East Kent Critical Care team. The Critical Care service operates across three units: Kent and Canterbury Hospital (8 beds), Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, Margate (9 beds), and the William Harvey Hospital (24 beds). The post is based at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, with on-call commitments; sessions at other sites are available if requested.
Clinical interests and facilities
The team has active interests across three units with a strong focus on critical care ultrasonography. We have state-of-the-art equipment for focused echocardiography and bedside ultrasonography, including accredited CUSIC and FICE mentors, two FICE supervisors, and a new echo machine with a training mannequin and modules for transthoracic and transoesophageal echo as well as lung and abdominal ultrasound (including a COVID lung ultrasound module). We pursue advanced ventilation options such as APRV and Intellivent ASV and run regular advanced ventilation workshops. Outreach and a Critical Care Rehabilitation service are well established, supported by a full allied health professional team.
Development and opportunities
We are one of the largest hospital trusts in England, with three acute hospitals and community sites serving around 700,000 people. The Trust supports involvement in medical education, research, clinical leadership, and opportunities to undertake an honorary senior lecturer post at KMMS (subject to agreement by KMMS) for successful applicants with an interest in medical education.

Through the Family First scheme we offer opportunities for partners of consultants offered substantive posts. We also provide removal expenses for substantive positions, up to 32 days of annual leave, and active support for study, quality improvement and patient safety work as part of the ‘We care’ improvement journey, including medical education and research.
