MYDoc Clinical Fellow (ST3-5 equivalent) Cardiology

The Medical Division at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals provides acute care across a range of medical specialties in a large, modern, purpose-built hospital in Wakefield. This includes a large Acute Assessment Unit, Acute Elderly Assessment Unit, Coronary Care, and Acute (Respiratory) Care Unit. We also provide care for acute elderly admissions and step-down care for patients in a less acute phase at Dewsbury & District Hospital.

Successful applicants will support the Cardiology specialty team in managing in-patient and outpatient workload and will participate in the General Medicine Trust-wide out-of-hours cover across both hospital sites.

Our Cardiology team comprises 15 consultants, 2 Specialty Doctors, 4 Specialty Registrars, 3 core trainees, and 3 Foundation trainees. We have valuable support from a team of specialist nurses based both in our trust and in the community.

Our vision is to deliver patient-centered, accessible, and integrated services, as seamlessly as possible with primary care. With 11 Coronary Care and 26 Cardiology beds, new diagnostic facilities, and access to a full range of non-invasive and invasive cardiac facilities, our team has access to exceptional, modern facilities, including general imaging such as TTE, TOE, CTCA, CMRI (including stress MR), and interventional radiology services.


Main duties of the job

* Provision of care with responsibility for managing patients with acute and chronic conditions, including complex cases.
* Referral of patients to other specialties as appropriate.
* Participation in specialty and cross-specialty multidisciplinary teams and meetings.
* Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate.
* Active involvement in audit and clinical governance, including service improvement activities.

Job responsibilities

Introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow in Cardiology at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust (MYTT) on a fixed-term basis for 12 months.

This post involves participation in the cross-site senior trainee General Medicine Registrar On-Call rota. Applicants will have the same educational opportunities as other trainees and will have protected Specialty Doctor Training (SDT) time.

These posts are not recognized UK training posts. However, post-holders will have a named supervisor and will be supported in scheduled educational opportunities within the Trust and specialties.

Introduction to the Division / Specialty from Dr. Nigel Artis - Divisional Clinical Director

We also care for elderly admissions and provide step-down care at Dewsbury & District Hospital.

Successful applicants will support the Cardiology team in managing inpatient and outpatient workloads and participate in the General Medicine Trust-wide out-of-hours cover across both hospital sites.

Our Cardiology team includes 15 consultants, 2 Specialty Doctors, 4 Specialty Registrars, 3 core trainees, and 3 Foundation trainees. We have invaluable support from specialist nurses based within the trust and in the community.

Our vision is to deliver patient-centered, accessible, and integrated services, seamlessly connected with primary care. With 11 Coronary Care and 26 Cardiology beds, advanced diagnostic facilities, and access to comprehensive non-invasive and invasive cardiac services, our team benefits from modern facilities, including general imaging (TTE, TOE), CTCA, CMRI (including stress MR), and interventional radiology. We also have established bradycardia pacing, complex device, and PCI services (excluding PPCI in the tertiary center). Additionally, we run a nurse-led heart failure service with community integration.

The Service Role

These posts will involve participation in the cross-site senior trainee rota, which complies with the 2016 junior doctor contract, averaging 48 hours per week. The rota pattern is attached to this job description.

Duties will primarily be based at Pinderfields Hospital but will involve delivering care across all sites.

The main duties include:

* Managing patients with acute and chronic conditions, including complex cases.
* Referring patients to other specialties as appropriate.
* Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings.
* Teaching and supervising junior medical staff and other clinicians.
* Engaging in audit and clinical governance activities, including service improvements.

The list is not exhaustive and duties may be adjusted according to circumstances and after discussion with the post-holder.

The MYDoc Training Programme Educational Input & Recognition

This post aims to provide experience relevant for national training program applications. Opportunities include developing specialist knowledge, leading quality improvement projects, and participating in departmental teaching. Many previous trainees have successfully progressed onto national training programs with our support.

Doctors appointed will receive relevant educational input, be allocated an Educational Supervisor, and develop a Personalised Work Schedule balancing clinical, educational, and professional development activities. Regular meetings with supervisors will ensure appropriate progress. Successful completion of the program will result in a Certificate of Achievement, with progress documented via workplace assessments, 360-degree feedback, reflections, and CPD records.

Terms & Conditions and Tenure

Employment will be as a MYDoc Clinical Fellow under Trust Terms and Conditions. The initial contract is for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to 3 years based on performance and mutual agreement.

Pay Scale

The roles are aligned with specialty training pay scales, starting at £61,825 per annum.

Appraisal and Revalidation

This post is not recognized for formal training but requires engagement with annual revalidation processes. All doctors must participate in appraisal and revalidation procedures, with Dr. Richard Robinson, Medical Director, acting as GMC Responsible Officer via GMC Connect.

Continuing Professional Development

All doctors are expected to engage in CPD, supported by the Trust’s policies and funding. Mandatory training programs are also in place.

Research

Doctors are encouraged to pursue research interests, liaising with the Trust’s R&D department within the framework of existing policies. The Trust is expanding its research activities.

Educational & Clinical Supervision

A named educational supervisor will oversee your development, with regular meetings throughout your appointment.

Teaching

The Trust values high-quality training and encourages senior doctors to participate in teaching, educational leadership, and training development roles.

Audit and Clinical Governance

Engagement in clinical governance and audit activities is integral, with support from the Clinical Audit Department. These activities are included in job planning objectives.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent qualification. Candidates should have MRCP(UK) Part 1 and full diploma, or equivalent qualifications such as Irish MRCPI, or higher qualifications like MFARM, MRCP, MRCS, or FRCA.
* Progress towards or attainment of Royal College exams.


Personal Attributes

* Good communication skills, both written and spoken.
* Flexibility and willingness to learn all hospital systems and adhere to policies.
* Physical ability to perform duties and evidence of competencies.
* Strong problem-solving skills, good time management, and organizational skills.
* Eligibility for GMC registration and a valid GMC number.


Experience

* Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies and Internal Medicine Stage 1 capabilities, or equivalent experience, including at least 36 months in medical specialties, with at least 18 months in acute medical inpatient care.
* Experience in teaching, clinical skills, and research.
