Job Title
Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with an interest in Gynaecological Oncology
Background
The James Paget University Hospital is a modern District General Hospital of approximately 500 beds, located in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia. It serves a population of 250,000 and experiences higher demand during the summer months. The department provides obstetrics and gynaecology services, including general and specialist clinics, level 1 neonatal care, urogynaecology, cancer services, colposcopy, fertility clinics, termination of pregnancy services and paediatric gynaecology. The main tertiary centre is the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, 26 miles away, and the University of East Anglia is the affiliated medical school.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will share the Obstetric and Gynaecology workload with Consultant colleagues, including out‑of‑hours responsibilities on a consultant on‑call rota. Current weekday on‑call commitments are 1:12, with 1:10 cover at weekends; the frequency will be reviewed as additional posts are filled. O&G advice will be provided to colleagues in other specialities as required. Governance, CPD and teaching will also be significant parts of the post holder’s duties.
About us
This position offers a specialist consultant the chance to contribute to a modern obstetric and gynaecological service within a well‑regarded Trust that provides a wide range of acute and community services. The hospital is situated in Gorleston, 200 metres from the beach, with easy access to the Norfolk Broads, the coastline and nearby towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The Trust is developing a new hospital site as part of the national New Hospital Programme.
Job responsibilities
The multidisciplinary team comprises colleagues based at James Paget University Hospital and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. The Gynae‑oncology Network MDT team includes three consultants (including this post and a weekly visiting gynaecology oncologist from NNUH) supported by a comprehensive team: histopathology, cytopathology, radiology, gynaecology cancer nursing, oncology, radiation oncology and the Macmillan palliative care team.
The successful applicant will work with the team that runs the triage service, rapid access clinics, MDT outcome and oncology follow‑up clinics to facilitate prompt diagnosis and provide a link between this service and the oncology team. They will also enhance cancer pathways and performance, lead the development of new pathways with the MDT and support senior management in shaping the future strategy of the gynaecology oncology service within the department.
The consultant will participate in the Obstetric and Gynaecology on‑call rota, which currently includes non‑resident weekday on‑call (1 in 12) and non‑resident weekend on‑call (1 in 10). Applicants must demonstrate a special interest in Gynaecological Oncology and solid obstetric skills, with the potential to undertake a leadership role within the service.
