The Independent is an online news publisher established in 1986 as a national newspaper independent of party political affiliations or proprietorial influence. In 2016, it transitioned to a fully digital publisher, focusing on sustainability and safeguarding its journalistic values.
The Independent has a history of innovation, including being the first British newspaper to add a Saturday magazine, give photography equal prestige as news copy, challenge the Westminster lobby system, and successfully transform into a digital-only platform.
Through various reader revenue streams like The Independent, Independent TV, eCommerce, indy100, and subscriptions, the organization aims to continue delivering independent journalism to over 100 million global visitors monthly. Its main offices are in London and New York, with an international editorial team.
The role
The Independent seeks an optimisation editor for the UK late shift (4pm - 1am, Monday - Friday, with some weekends). This role involves working within a small team of digital publishing experts to expand the brand's reach. The ideal candidate will have a strong news background, comprehensive knowledge of digital publishing including SEO, social media, and editing, and be capable of working independently to optimise content for broad audiences.
The role is suitable for candidates seeking career advancement, with responsibilities including crafting compelling headlines, editing news copy, planning evergreen content for major events, and engaging with senior colleagues like the Head of Growth.
Applicants should have a keen interest in journalism's future, including AI use on the Bulletin platform, and experience in similar roles is essential. Candidates must be comfortable managing multiple priorities calmly and methodically. The role offers hybrid or remote working, with periodic training at the London HQ, and applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
