Job Details

* Job Title: Senior Airway Fellow in Neuro ICU
* Start Date: August 2026
* Contract Type: Fixed Term
* End Date: 6 months
* Purpose for Fixed Term: Train Cont – Trst Trainee Prog – Trust Appointed Medical Foundation Fellowship Programme Trainee only

The role involves residency in the Wessex Neurological Intensive Care Unit. The Neuro ICU is a 13‑bed dedicated Neurological Intensive Care Unit, admitting approximately 800 patients yearly, including severe neurological trauma, subarachnoid haemorrhages, neurosurgical cases and acute neurological cases.


Duties

* Step up into a senior leadership role, lead daily ward rounds on Neuro ICU and be part of senior decision‑making in the role of “acting up Consultant”.
* Staff the Resident Airway Fellow rota in and out of hours on the Neuro Intensive Care Unit.
* Further training in practical procedures relevant to Neuro Intensive Care including central venous cannulation (subclavian), transfer medicine, bedside ECHO and lung ultrasound.
* Specific training in Neuro‑ICU procedures and monitoring such as external ventricular drains and cerebrospinal fluid sampling, analysis and intrathecal drug administration, lumbar puncture and management of lumbar drains, intracranial pressure monitoring, parenchymal brain tissue oxygenation monitoring and its management, participation in brain‑stem death testing and liaison with specialist organ donation teams.
* Active participation in unit and departmental teaching in critical care, neuro‑anaesthesia, neurosurgery, acute neurology, general medicine and infectious diseases relevant to the neuro‑critical care patient.
* Opportunities for neurology, neuroanaesthesia, neurosurgery and neuro‑intensive care research with the aim of presentation at local, national and international meetings such as the NACCS, EuroNeuro and the LIVES meetings.


Qualifications & Experience

* Prior recent experience working in anaesthesia and critical care within a UK NHS Trust.
* Successful attainment of minimal anaesthesia “airway” competence, demonstrated through evidence of full completion of the “Initial Assessment of Anaesthetic Competence (IAC)” certificate or its equivalent.
* Proficiency at arterial line insertion and central venous cannulation, independent ability and interest in teaching these skills to juniors.
* Proficiency at intra‑and inter‑hospital transfers of Level 3 patients.
* Interest in the speciality and knowledge of common neurological emergencies and relevant critical care syndromes.
* A desire to gain experience in the care of the neurologically injured critical care patient with training aiming towards attainment of either CCT or CESR in Intensive Care or Anaesthesia.
* Minimum of 6 years of specialty training.
* Relevant higher speciality exam (e.g. FRCP, FRCA, FRCS).
* Portfolio of evidence demonstrating progression according to the curriculum of the speciality.


Additional Information

Resident Airway Fellows work a 1:9 full‑shift “airway” rota supported by dedicated Consultant input. Applicants must demonstrate competence in airway management of critically unwell patients and experience in anaesthesia/critical care. Full attainment of the “Initial Assessment of Competence” is essential, and supporting evidence should include satisfactory workplace‑based assessments (WBPAs) demonstrating independent practice.

Full study leave support is provided. Fellows are encouraged to participate in research trials and present at international meetings.

The Unit is recognised by the UK ICM committee for training in Intensive Care Medicine and won the NHS Confederation “Team of the Year” 2023. Contract & Compensation

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms for Trust‑appointed, non‑training fellow doctors. Applicants needing Skilled Worker sponsorship must meet Home Office criteria. The basic salary will be at the nodal pay point for Grade 5, plus additional remuneration for hours, weekend allowance and any enhanced pay. The educational framework and CPD opportunities are supported by the Trust.
