Job overview

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance and advice on promoting high quality health, public health and social care.

We improve outcomes for people using the NHS and other public health and social care services by:

* producing evidence-based guidance and advice for health, public health and social care practitioners
* developing quality standards and performance metrics for people providing and commissioning health, public health and social care services
* providing a range of information services for commissioners, practitioners and managers across the spectrum of health and social care.

The Centre for Guidelines develops guidance on the promotion of good health and social care and the prevention of ill health, the appropriate treatment and care for people with specific diseases and conditions, and service delivery. The guidance is used by those working in the NHS, local government, social care, and patients and their families. The NICE guidelines programme is one of the largest in the world, having produced more than 300 guidelines since it was established in 2001.


Main duties of the job

We are looking for people with demonstrable experience in conducting systematic reviews or evidence syntheses.


You will be based in the Professional team within the Centre for Guidelines and will work on a range of topics collaboratively within small multidisciplinary teams.


You will provide methodological input into producing evidence –based guidance, including development of recommendations and quality standards for the NHS.


We are interested in hearing from experienced systematic reviewers who can:

* Lead the development of evidence reviews
* Undertake systematic reviews and evidence synthesis, including
o Evaluating the validity and relevance of data which may be highly complex, and from a variety of sources
o Critically appraising relevant clinical research studies
o Collating and summarising qualitative and quantitative evidence
o Synthesising information to give a balanced view of the evidence base
o Assessing the completeness of the evidence base, identifying gaps and highlighting important issues for discussion by topic experts
o Producing evidence reports that include deliberative discussions and conclusions that underpin decision making
* Collate, interpret and present current practice data when supporting the development of Quality Standard statements
* Present highly complex and sometimes conflicting or contentious information with clarity and sensitivity to groups of people including topic experts and non-specialists

Experience

* Experience of working in and contributing to at least one area of guidance or policy development: surveillance; health research and assessment; systematic review methodology; quality improvement methods; implementation or; health technology assessment


Experience

* Experience or familiarity with research design, methodology, conduct and reporting.


Experience

* Experience in critically appraising health literature.


Skills/Knowledge

* Highly Specialist/Advanced expertise in at least one of the following areas: healthcare research methods; systematic review methodology and synthesis; quality improvement methods; routinely collected health date; medical statistics; clinical trials; public health and health policy; social care or; epidemiology


Skills/Knowledge

* The ability to take primary responsibility for the design and execution of evidence synthesis to support any stage of developing guidance or standards.


Skills/Knowledge

* Ability to communicate highly complex information accurately and persuasively using a variety of presentation techniques, in accessible language to an audience of varied technical backgrounds, and sensitively to patients who have the medical condition under discussion.
