Job Description:
Following its recent acquisition by SLR, Wardell Armstrong now forms part of a leading global environmental and sustainability consultancy working on projects across the world from over 100 offices. We are looking to recruit a motivated and ambitious Ecologist with particular experience in bird surveying to expand our ecological team at our office in Leeds.
Overview of team / business area
You will join a supportive team based in Leeds, with the option of hybrid/flexible working. Our team comprises over 200 ecologists across the UK and Ireland, supporting projects in renewable energy (wind and solar farms, battery storage), infrastructure (roads, rail), and commercial and residential development.
The role
You will work with experienced ornithologists and ecologists on nationwide projects. The ecology team collaborates with other environmental professionals, including planners, archaeologists, arborists, and landscape architects. Your responsibilities will include:
* Conducting ornithological fieldwork, including breeding and wintering bird surveys.
* Performing habitat surveys and preliminary site assessments.
* Carrying out surveys for protected species such as bats, badgers, water voles, reptiles, and amphibians.
* Analyzing ecological data.
* Supervising ecological activities on sites.
About you
The ideal candidate is passionate about ecology, especially birds, and committed to finding ecological solutions for development projects. Requirements include:
* Strong ornithological identification skills.
* Practical experience in ecological fieldwork.
* A minimum of a BSc (Hons) in Ecology or a related accredited field.
* A full driving license.
* Flexibility and adaptability to meet peak demands, including occasional longer or unsociable hours and travel within the UK.
Having a protected species license is advantageous.
