Senior Systems Engineer (Rail)
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Systems Engineer (Rail) to join our Systems Engineering, Information Management and Rail Engineering Management practice within our Consulting Engineering division. Offices are located in Manchester, Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Swindon and Cardiff, and we welcome applications from across the UK.
What the role will offer
The standard working week is 37.5 hours, with flexible working practices including hybrid, part‑time and adaptable patterns.
Key Projects
As an appointed Design Partner on UK’s most significant rail and highways infrastructure projects such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans‑Pennine Route Upgrade and Cardiff Crossrail, our teams deliver design and systems solutions across Network Rail project stages.
What You Will Be Doing
Senior Systems Engineers play a pivotal role within our Systems Engineering capability, working closely with clients such as Network Rail.
Responsibilities
* Apply Systems Engineering principles and techniques to define, integrate and deliver complex multi‑disciplinary engineering solutions
* Lead and support requirements management and Verification & Validation (V&V) activities, including:
o Develop project requirements from the Client Remit and manage change
o Manage traceability and satisfaction linkages across multiple requirement levels
o Apportion requirements into delivery scope packages
o Support verification and undertake validation activities
* Manage the integration of infrastructure change with Operations and Maintenance organisations
* Support and oversee systems integration testing
* Produce and implement:
o Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMP)
o Systems Integration Plans (SIP)
o RAM/SRAM Plans, including support to setting RAM targets
o Prepare and review technical reports, studies and programmes of work
o Support the application of CDM Regulations and Safe‑by‑Design principles
o Provide guidance, review and mentoring support to more junior engineers
Desired Experience
* Developed experience and expertise in systems engineering processes within complex engineering or infrastructure environments
* Demonstrable experience delivering requirements management and V&V on major multi‑disciplinary projects
* Experience within the rail sector or wider infrastructure systems (desirable)
* Experience managing interfaces across infrastructure, rolling stock, operations and maintenance
* Experience using Bentley ComplyPro or IBM DOORS (desirable)
* A proven track record in delivering technically sound engineering solutions in line with relevant standards and client requirements
* Experience working on multi‑disciplinary projects with knowledge across infrastructure disciplines
* Strong understanding of design processes and procedures
* Knowledge of CDM Regulations, systems safety and CSM‑REA (desirable)
* A solid grasp of engineering management practices for delivering multi‑disciplinary railway infrastructure projects
* Successful completion of initial professional development leading to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status (or working towards)
* A bachelor’s or master’s degree in an appropriate engineering discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience
* Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, client‑focused approach
