Department Overview

The Asset Management Workshop plays a key role in supporting MJ Quinn’s operational efficiency by maintaining, repairing and refurbishing tooling, plant and equipment used across the field and engineering teams. The primary focus is ensuring that all assets are compliant with regulatory requirements, serviceable and available for deployment to meet the company’s operational requirements.

The workshop team is responsible for diagnosing faults, carrying out mechanical and electrical repairs, performing preventative maintenance, and testing equipment to meet quality and safety standards. The department also carries out equipment calibration, stock control and asset tracking to ensure operational continuity and compliance with company procedures.

Working closely with other departments including Operational Teams and Health & Safety, the Asset Management Workshop ensures that all tooling and equipment is maintained to the highest standards, supporting the reliability and performance of MJ Quinn’s nationwide network operations.

Job Summary

The Plant and Tooling Maintenance Technician is a critical role in the maintenance, servicing and repair of a wide range of plant equipment and tooling utilised within the Telecoms and Energy industries. The role will provide expert advice and support to both the workshop and field-based engineers and help in the mentoring and training of workshop personnel. The role will involve improving workshop processes and supporting the Service Centre Supervisor with technical problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

* Carry out advanced fault-finding, repair, servicing and maintenance of a range of tools and plant equipment, including, but not limited to splicers, fibre-optic test equipment, petrol generators, hydraulic breakers & power packs, drills and Stihl saws.
* Undertake strip-downs and rebuilds of engines, motors, and hydraulic systems where required.
* Perform PAT testing and ensure compliance with electrical safety standards.
* Inspect and refurbish tools and equipment returned from the field or leavers.

· Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards when repairing and servicing equipment.

* Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to in-field engineers.
* Maintain accurate service and inspection records in line with compliance requirements.
* Work with the wider workshop team to drive improvements in tooling availability, reliability, and turnaround times.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across workshop processes
* Demonstrate flexibility to assist across all areas of the workshop as required.

Person Speciation

Experience

Essential:

* Proven experience in plant, tooling, or mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair.
* Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to strip down, service, and rebuild tools or equipment.
* Confident fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
* Understanding of PAT testing, calibration, and inspection requirements.
* Experience working in a workshop, engineering, tool hire or maintenance environment.
* Strong attention to safety, accuracy, and quality.

· Strong problem-solving, diagnostic and fault-finding skills and excellent attention to detail.

· Ability to work both independently in a workshop setting and collaboratively with field engineers.

Desired:

* Time-served apprenticeship in relevant discipline
* Supervisory or mentoring experience within a small team.
* Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, small engines, or power tools.
* Experience maintaining equipment such as JCB, Belle, Husqvarna, or similar plant.
* Computer literacy for record-keeping and asset management.

Skills

Qualifications

Essential:

* An Electrical / Mechanical qualification at City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3 or above
* GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
* Full UK driving licence (essential, occasional site visits may be required)

Desired:

· Health & safety awareness, ideally with a valid IOSH Working Safely or similar certification.

* PAT Testing and calibration training

· Forklift licence (advantageous)
