Overview
Essex County Council is seeking a Business Support Assistant to provide essential administrative support to frontline Social Workers within the Mid Service Support team. This is an exciting, varied role that involves high-quality administrative tasks, customer service, and active contribution to service delivery.
Responsibilities
* Ordering Passports/Birth Certificates.
* Creating purchase orders for workers.
* Ordering goods and services online.
* Provide high quality, efficient and effective Business Support services to internal and external customers within agreed timescales and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
* Act as a professional representative of the Business Support service at a local level, dealing with customers face to face and via telephone or redirecting in line with Essex customer standards.
* Provide high quality self-directed administrative support, checking own work and proactively looking to raise standards.
* Maintain confidential records according to Essex County Council guidance.
* Deal with correspondence for the team or service in a timely, consistent and professional manner.
* Share knowledge and good practice with colleagues and highlight more efficient ways of doing tasks.
* Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework.

Role Details
As a Business Support Assistant, you will receive comprehensive training on all internal systems. This role provides an opportunity to learn a broad range of administrative skills in a supportive environment and make a meaningful difference for Essex residents.
About You
* You will have a good standard of basic education - 5 GCSEs grade C and above (including Maths and English) or a minimum of 6 months office experience.
* Excellent face to face customer service skills, communication and conflict management skills.
* Strong organisational and administrative skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Ability to use computerised systems with high speed and accuracy - including Microsoft Office and internal ECC databases.
* Ability to communicate in a manner easily understood and tailored to the audience.
* You may have access to sensitive and/or personal information and must follow GDPR regulations.
* Ability to think of alternative ways of doing things and be open to new work practices and change.
* Ability to take ownership of work and fulfil commitments, checking for accuracy.
* Reliable for on-site work as you will be onsite 5 days a week.
What you will be doing
* Providing emergency petty cash.
* Occasionally working at one of our Family Centre receptions.
* Dealing with inbox requests such as raising purchase orders, using TRIPPS, creating genograms.
Role Details
Contract: Fixed Term, Full Time. Salary: £25,081 per annum. Location: Chelmsford. Working Style: Anywhere worker. Closing Date: 8 September 2025. This is a fixed-term contract/secondment until 4 September 2026 with hybrid office-based requirements (approximately 2-3 days per week in the office and occasional travel to other Essex offices as needed). Part-time schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:00–17:30 (22 hours per week). Pro-rata salary: £14,913 per annum.
