Neonatal Deputy Matron

The Deputy Matron works alongside the Neonatal Matron with the aim to support and develop the outstanding Neonatal services at UCLH. The Neonatal team work within the UCLH Perinatal Team to provide collaborative care to babies and families who are cared for within our services.
This role is both managerial and clinical, therefore would appeal to those who strive to maintain clinical skills whilst gaining and building on managerial skills.

Main duties of the job
The post holder provides forward‑thinking clinical and professional leadership to the nursing team at all levels within the Neonatal unit and transitional care, ensuring nursing care is delivered to a high standard and that the nursing resource is managed effectively. The post holder will have primary responsibility for timely rostering and all associated requirements including temporary staffing within the department. With the support of Human Resources the post holder will be required to undertake responsibilities in relation to performance management, employee‑led complaints and all associated HR processes in accordance with Trust policy. The post holder contributes to the ongoing implementation of the nursing and midwifery strategy, ensuring achievement of its objectives and proactively modernising midwifery and nursing roles in accordance with the needs of service users and service requirements. They will be responsible for maintaining quality, performance, service improvement and transformation and play a key role in the progression of initiatives to further improve neonatal services. They will work collaboratively with a focus on providing highly visible and credible clinical leadership, to ensure that the patient experience within the neonatal services is of the highest possible standard at all times and that this is fairly and accurately reflected within the patient feedback, friends and family quality metrics.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will further be responsible to drive action planning in relation to patient safety initiatives, all aspects of clinical governance and care quality improvements within the department, taking an active role within clinical governance and divisional quality and safety meetings, deputising for the Matron where required.
The post holder will contribute, in partnership with the Neonatal Matron, Neonatal Clinical Consultant Lead, Divisional Clinical Director and Divisional Management team, in developing the division's strategic direction and policy framework, ensuring that the division contributes significantly to the achievement of corporate objectives. The post holder will be responsible to ensure that effective governance arrangements are implemented, appropriately maintained and shared learning is disseminated within the nursing and midwifery team and clinical governance groups, with key agreements for ongoing action planning in relation to improvements, change of practice required.
Knowledge and Qualifications
* Registered Nurse / Registered Children's Nurse
* Qualified in Speciality in Neonatal Nursing (post registration)
* Evidence of continuing professional development
* Experience to MSc level in relevant subject
Skills and Abilities
* Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the National Policy context for nursing practice and development, including for example knowledge of National Nursing Strategy, the NHS Plan and National Service Frameworks
* Experience of working with patients with enhanced health and social care needs to provide highly specialist advice concerning the care and treatment of intensive care patients including end of life care and breaking bad news
* Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of clinical Governance and able to evidence working to strengthen service performance and governance and improve patient experience
* Proven experience with investigative skills and report writing to analyse highly complex facts and situations including services, organisation, staffing or incident details and managing resources required in relation to untoward or serious incidents
* Evidence of implementing change in the clinical practice
* Evidence of teaching in clinical practice
* Experience of implementing change in clinical practice or service delivery to improve the quality of patient care
* Experience of effectively managing staff

Specific Requirements
* The post holder will need to be able to be flexible to work 24/7 if needed to cover clinically. Clinical shifts need to be undertaken within a four week rota to ensure service needs are met.
