The has an exciting new opportunity for an Associate Professor in Subsurface Hydrology and is looking for a highly capable, enthusiastic and well-motivated applicant wishing to develop a career in a world leading teaching and research institution.

The Department has an outstanding international reputation and has been awarded the top rating in every national review of university research held since 1986. You will join the Section, which is known worldwide for its wide ranging and high-quality programme of research and teaching activities.

Candidates will be considered from across the breadth of the field and will also be expected to collaborate across other disciplines. A strong track record of research excellence and originality will be required to establish a programme of research that can contribute to water management and quality, hydrological and transport simulation and forecasting, water resources and risk planning, climate resilience, subsurface remediation, ecohydrology and agrohydrology, among others. You will also contribute to teaching activities.


You will plan, resource, and direct an original and high-quality research programme in Subsurface Hydrology or in the broader field of Hydrology.

You will also:

1. Supervise, train and mentor research students and staff with the highest scientific rigour;
2. Disseminate results through leading international journals and conferences;
3. Engage with industry and other agencies to identify current challenges for research;
4. Maintain a leading and prominent role in the research area.

You will contribute to the Department’s wide spectrum of Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching through lectures, seminars, course work, tutorials and personal supervision.


5. You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Subsurface Hydrology, Hydrogeology or a related field.
6. You will have an established national reputation and developing international reputation and expertise in the field of Subsurface Hydrology and Hydrogeology.
7. A significant track record in attracting high levels of research funding is essential.
8. You must also have an excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications, confirming national/ international standing (commensurate with career stage)
9. Experience of training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students together with supervision of higher degrees (PhD) is essential as well as the ability to collaborate and build sustainable effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
