Rotational Bed Management & Complex Discharge Sister

The closing date is 15 April 2026

The post holder will be required to manage and support bed management and complex discharge planning process at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. The successful candidate will be a key member of the team working closely with the Senior Sister ensuring they provide effective bed management and complex discharge planning across the NHS adult wards and CYP including management of the team.

A high degree of effective coordination, communication, networking and liaison will be required to establish and maintain good working relationships.

The post will undertake a 3-month rotation programme giving the individual an opportunity to gain both bed management and complex discharge skills and experience. This offers a flexible working environment for the team when dealing with critical 'pinch' points within bed management and complex discharge workload.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties

* Identify complex discharges, liaise with the MDT and external agencies to achieve timely discharges or transfer from the trust, and elevate any potential issues as appropriate.
* Establish patient pathways between primary, community, intermediate and secondary care services, to expedite timely discharge and improve patient flow throughout the trust.

Bed management

* Providing effective bed management across the Trust for both NHS adult and CYP patients ensuring the seamless flow of patients through the Trust.
* To work with the Senior Theatre management team ensuring effective communication of TCI/Theatre lists by attending the daily theatre huddle.

Person Specification


knowledge and training

* minimum of 2 years within an NHS setting as senior B5 level
* Knowledge of discharge planning and issues that affect complex discharges
* experience of working with patients with a cognitive impairment


communication and relationship skills

* able to organise self and prioritse
* Ability to meet deadlines, organise work and self motiviated
* Good report writing skills


Analytical and judgment skills

* Ability to exercise own initiaitve and work indepedently
* problem solving and liaison skills
* Ability to work in partnership with stakeholders
* Teaching experience
