Locum Consultant Anaesthetist

The Trust seeks to appoint a whole‑time Locum Consultant Anaesthetist to cover maternity leave and support a forward‑thinking anaesthesia team. The role involves a 10‑day per‑week schedule with 9 programmed activities (PAs) and 1 short‑stay activity (SPA).
Main duties of the job
Provide pre‑operative assessment, anaesthesia and post‑operative follow‑up for adult patients across all specialties. Introduce and apply new techniques as appropriate and share general departmental work, including cover for consultant colleagues where practical. Support junior medical staff through teaching and mentorship.
Person Specification
Essential Professional Qualifications
* NHS experience at an acute hospital within an inner‑city setting.
Knowledge and Skills
* Experience in pre‑operative assessment with clinical pathway development and coordination of peri‑operative care.
* Experience providing anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgery in neuro‑anaesthesia, neuroradiology and mechanical thrombectomy.
* Familiarity with digital prescribing, electronic patient records and a paperless operating theatre environment.
* SIA/fellowship or equivalent in a subspecialty area such as paediatrics, regional, acute pain or peri‑operative medicine.
Management and Administrative Experience
* Attendance on a formal management training course.
* Experience in rota design and leadership.
* Experience in service improvement for elective recovery and day‑surgery practice.
* Experience in development of peri‑operative pathways.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
Approval of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 will be required. A submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) will be made to check for any previous criminal convictions.
