Summary

This Lead Electrician position requires a skilled professional who will be responsible for planning, installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in support of Joint US Somali Military Operations in Somalia, Africa. A clear working understanding of electrical principles, UK and US Electrical Codes, and Regulations is essential. The successful candidate must be skilled in using specialized tools and equipment. This position requires qualification, skill, and experience handling potentially hazardous electrical systems operating in low voltage ranges and with similarly charged equipment. This position requires clear understanding of safety protocols and safety regulations. The incumbent will install, modify, and maintain low to medium voltage electrical systems. The incumbent must possess Approved Electrician skills, verifiable electrical systems work experience and hold an Approved Installation or Maintenance Electrician’s license issued by the UK Joint Industry Board, ECS Gold Card. This position operates independently, and the incumbent should require minimal supervision.


Duties & Responsibilities

* Installs, tests and repairs grounding systems in accordance with accepted codes, standards and manufacturer’s recommendations.
* Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials.
* Provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
* Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring.
* Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit using tools such as hacksaw, pipe threader and conduit bender.
* Pulls wiring through conduit, assisted by electrician helper.
* Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, using knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps per accepted codes and standards.
* Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment, using hand tools. Installs control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays and circuit‑breaker panels, fastening in place with screws or bolts, using hand tools and power tools.
* Connects power cables and ground leads to equipment and other electrical utilization equipment such as motors, HVAC units, etc.
* Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing instruments, such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
* Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustment, relocation or replacement.
* May repair faulty equipment or systems.
* May provide data to Automated Information Systems (AIS).
* May connect pier electrical systems at seaport.
* Performs duties in accordance with:
* US Army Regulation AR 710-2 Supply Policy below the National Level
* US Army Regulation AR 735-5 Property Accountability Policies
* US Army Regulation AR 420–1 Army Facilities Management
* US Army Regulation AR 190-11 Physical Security of AA&E
* US Department of Defense Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC)


Experience & Qualification

Must be a Citizen of the United Kingdom, and possess a valid Passport and valid Driving License.

* GCSE (grade 4/C in English and Maths) or equivalent formal education, or a functional English and Math skills qualification taken as part of an Electrical Apprenticeship training program.
* Minimum of four years’ Approved Installation or Maintenance Electrician’s experience is required.
* Requires the job knowledge, skill level and physical ability necessary to perform assigned Approved Electrician functions.
* Full qualification as an Installation or Maintenance Electrician. A Joint Industry Board “Approved Electrician” ECS Gold Card is required.
* Completion of an advanced Level 3 technical certificate or diploma (such as: the City & Guilds 2365 Course Diploma Package for new entrants to the Electrician’s Trade) through the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS).
* Pass the United Kingdom Industry’s final assessment of occupational competence, specifically the AM2 (Achievement Measurement 2) or AM2E (for experienced Electricians).
