South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Medical Nurse Practitioner (Band 6) in our Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) Unit. The closing date is 28 June 2026.
Our Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) Unit receives adult medical referrals from ED, GPs and WMAS. The core principle of AEC is that many patients requiring urgent assessment can be safely managed the same day, avoiding unnecessary admission or limiting hospital stay to a few hours.
The Band 6 Medical Nurse Practitioner (MNP) is a specialist acute clinician responsible for the autonomous assessment, examination, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with acute and often undifferentiated medical conditions. The post holder must make timely, high‑level clinical decisions to support safe same‑day care, appropriate escalation or admission where required.
This role demands advanced clinical assessment skills and recent, demonstrable experience within acute medicine, AMU, AEC/SDEC or emergency care settings. The MNP must be competent in interpreting diagnostics, managing complex and deteriorating patients, and initiating evidence‑based care without direct supervision in a high‑acuity, fast‑paced environment.
The role provides senior clinical leadership, supports patient flow and admission avoidance, and ensures safe, timely care aligned with acute medicine standards. This is a specialist acute post and cannot be undertaken safely without current, relevant acute competence and proven autonomous practice experience.
The post holder will be a clinically based competent practitioner who will take a supportive role in strengthening the nursing contribution to patients and service users within the speciality across the organisation.
In partnership with the medical team and the senior nursing team the post holder will assist in developing, implementing and evaluating a seamless service to patients within the Elective Division.
Using enhanced nursing skills; you will contribute to the management of patients which may include assessing patients, ordering investigations, reviewing results, undertaking clinical procedures, administering medications utilising patient group directives and completion of discharge summaries all of which are within the scope of enhanced nursing competence.
The post holder will contribute to the ongoing development of innovative practice, standards of care and strategies to ensure practice development.
Contribute to the delivery of evidence‑based personalised and compassionate care which places quality at the heart of practice. Care will be responsive to individual needs and reflect current local protocols and national guidelines.
Ensure safe administration of medications within current national and local frameworks and policies using Patient Group Directives.
Identify and facilitate the discharge of medical patients and completion of discharge summaries to affect timely discharges.
Work with clinical teams to ensure each patient has a realistic estimated date of discharge and that these dates are being proactively managed, ensuring this information is put onto the Trust information systems.
Use knowledge of the speciality and treatment to support the development of personalised care pathways for individuals and assist with holistic needs assessment, planning and evaluation of care and all care interventions.
Act as a patient advocate to facilitate the process of shared decision making in respect to health, choice of treatment and care. Use interpersonal and communication skills where there may be significant barriers in order to build confidence.
Advise on disease and symptom management for patients within the speciality in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. Evaluate response to interventions and cascade to relevant colleagues.
Support patients to self‑manage their condition where deemed appropriate. Provide education for those who will need guided support to self‑manage and those who will need on‑going face‑to‑face support.
Act as a resource providing specialist advice and support across service boundaries to ensure optimum liaison and co‑ordination of care.
Undertake clinical competencies relevant to this service to demonstrate expertise in enhanced nursing roles. Assess and assist in managing individual psychological reactions to diagnosis, treatment and associated side effects of these.
Act as an accessible professional for the multidisciplinary team (MDT) supporting the management of a clinical caseload. This will necessitate a degree of autonomy and advocacy to ensure the delivery of appropriate care.
Contribute to the management of a caseload of patients within specialty and prioritise workload to meet patient and service need.
Act as a role model demonstrating high standards of holistic care and provide clinical leadership to others across the organisation.
Provide support to ensure public and patient involvement is embedded within the sphere of practice.
Assist in setting measurable outcomes for the service and continuous evaluation of practice supporting changes where necessary.
Participate in operational and strategic planning for the development and delivery of the service. Support service improvement activities.
Attend Trust senior nurse meetings and contribute to the agenda and strategic nursing vision.
Represent the Trust by contributing to and participating in meetings locally, regional and nationally relating to the speciality.
Contribute to an annual service review, gathering information to support the annual report.
Take personal responsibility for ensuring effective communication between all service providers.
Act as a role model for excellent communication skills.
Work in partnership with patients, relatives and carers to obtain complex information.
Create a climate in which patients are empowered to make informed choices.
Ensure all clinical practice is documented appropriately in patient records ensuring that the NMC guidelines for documentation are adhered to.
Informally manage complaints with the aim of a satisfactory resolution. Ensure appropriate escalation when this is not achieved.
Demonstrate empathetic interpersonal and communication skills in supporting, informing and advising patients and carers through diagnosis, treatment, disease progression, prognosis and supportive and palliative care where applicable. This will involve occasionally imparting significant news or supporting patients and carers during and following such consultations.
Effectively and sensitively communicate complex and sensitive information to emotionally distressed patients and family/carers at key points along the care pathway on a frequent basis.
Identify and use educational strategies to deliver information to patients and carers.
Assist in the development of other professionals by contributing to Trust wide specialist education and training.
Support the delivery of formal and informal teaching initiatives as part of the Trusts education strategy as agreed with the appropriate senior nurse to ensure practice development, staff empowerment and improved care for patients.
Take personal responsibility for life‑long learning and personal development through clinical supervision and appraisal. Actively engage with learning and development opportunities needed to work as an advancing practitioner and take appropriate action to ensure these needs are met.
Contribute to promoting educational links with local providers of higher education and deliver lectures on a range of courses.
Act as a mentor/assessor/clinical supervisor as appropriate.
Assist in the development of written patient information and use existing appropriate resources to inform users, according to individually assessed need.
Work within the NMC code of professional conduct.
Contribute to the development of policies and clinical guidelines to support the service.
In all aspects of work demonstrate an ability to work across organisational and professional boundaries, ensuring the delivery of high quality care.
Promote collaborative working relationships and effective communication between all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Develop the evolving skill set required of the Medical Nurse Practitioner role, ensuring that they reflect the individuals holistic needs and fit within the nursing agenda.
Assist in the development of relevant standards, protocols and procedures in conjunction with the multi‑professional team in relation to the Medical Nurse Practitioner role, ensuring that clinical practices are evidence based and benchmarked against best practice.
Achieve competency in core skills for the role and to continue to explore new ways in which clinical practice can be further developed.
Ensure compliance with all Trust policies and procedures at all times.
Contribute to the clinical governance agenda.
