Overview
The Research Nurse role at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust supports the delivery of oncology research studies. The position serves as a critical link between research protocols and clinical practice, safeguarding trial integrity while ensuring a safe and informed patient experience.
Responsibilities
* Study Coordination
o Assist with the initial set‑up and ongoing delivery of oncology research studies, ensuring compliance with ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and international regulations.
o Coordinate clinical investigations, including collection, accurate documentation and supporting the principal investigator.
* Patient Screening & Consent
o Identify and screen potential subjects for eligibility, developing action plans to overcome recruitment barriers.
o Lead or assist with the informed consent process, ensuring participants understand the voluntary nature of the trial and their rights.
* Sample Oversight
o Perform clinical tasks such as cannulation and phlebotomy.
o Oversee processing, centrifugation and storage of blood samples.
* Clinical Care and Patient Advocacy
o Act as the primary point of contact for trial participants, providing specialist clinical advice.
o Work closely with the principal investigator to ensure safe administration of trial treatments.
o Identify, record and report serious adverse events to maintain participant safety.
o Serve as an educational resource for patients, families and Trust staff.
* Leadership and Team Management
o Assist the team leader in managing research staff and ensuring high‑quality, patient‑focused care.
o Mentor and coach junior staff, facilitating development and performance appraisals.
o Promote reflective practice and continuous improvement within the team.
* Administration and Professional Standards
o Complete Case Report Forms (CRFs) accurately and maintain recruitment records.
o Ensure governance of trial documentation, including patient information sheets and GP correspondence.
o Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of research methodology and participate in clinical audits.
o Operate in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and all relevant regulations.
Qualifications & Person Specification
* Essential Qualifications
o NMC Level One registration or other relevant registration.
* Knowledge & Experience
o Significant clinical and research experience.
o Experience of multidisciplinary working and collaboration with other agencies.
o Resource management skills.
o Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development.
o Ability to work autonomously and as part of a small and wider multi‑disciplinary team.
o Knowledge and experience of managing complex relationships.
* Desirable
o Clinical trials experience.
Employment Details
* Band: 6
* Salary: £41,957 to £50,387 per annum (pro rata, including HCAS supplement)
* Contract: Fixed term, 12 months
* Working pattern: Full time
