Job Summary
As part of the expansion of the Royal Eye Unit we are recruiting a Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in medical retina for our thriving Ophthalmology Department at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team caring for over 70,000 patients per year, offering a full range of eye care services including outpatient clinics, day‑case surgery, and acute referral service.
Main duties
Provide first‑class ophthalmology care supported by consultants, junior doctors and allied health professionals. Attend outpatient clinics and perform day‑case surgery at Kingston Hospital and other local sites as demanded. Work closely with medical and surgical colleagues, clinical fellows, specialty doctors and optometrists. Participate in postgraduate teaching and training of all grades of staff. Support the Acute Referral Clinic (ARC) and regional on‑call rota.

Person Specification
Essential
* Full GMC registration with license to practice
* Possession of CCT or CESR in Ophthalmology
* On GMC specialist register or within 6 months of CCT from interview date
* FRCOPhth or equivalent
* Current wide‑range general ophthalmology, vitreoretinal and medical retina experience
* Completed at least one year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery
* Independent cataract surgeon
* Independent vitreoretinal surgeon
* Sub‑specialty experience in medical retina
* Able to communicate at strategic and operational level
* Understanding of clinical governance, audit, and research; evidence of teaching
* Leadership and organisational skills within a multidisciplinary team
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; enthusiastic and approachable
* Team player, flexible, committed to continuous professional development and clinical governance
Desirable
* Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
* Completed fellowship in medical retina
* Attended management training course; knowledge of finance/budgets
* Setting up a service experience
* Completed 'Train the Trainers' course
* Other certificates of training/education; evidence of teaching
