Our Pipe Band and piping and drumming students play an important part in our music department, with some students also being part of the CCF. The Pipe Major is supported by two permanent instructors (piping and drumming) who provide lessons across the two Schools and lead our award-winning bands. Our bank of Visiting Music Teachers (VMTs) allows us to offer a wide range of musical opportunities for our students.
VMTs have a direct billing relationship with the parents/guardians of their students. The School sets a minimum charge for lessons and applies a Facility Charge for the use of the School's resources.
The School believes that music plays an important role in young people's education. The Music Departments at both Schools include a Head or Director of Music, as well as a curricular music teacher. Additionally, there are Heads of Strings and of Wind, Brass, and Percussion who support various bands, groups, orchestras, ensembles, and choirs, and also teach their respective instruments.
Both our Junior and Senior School campuses are ideally located in the Stockbridge area, with the Junior School near the Botanic Gardens and the Senior School at Henderson Row. Visiting Music Teachers are welcomed into the School community and given access to the School's resources and facilities.
The Edinburgh Academy seeks to expand its bank of self-employed Visiting Music Teachers within the Pipe Band Team, specifically looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Bass and Tenor Drum Teacher from August 2025. The role requires approximately one and a half days of teaching per week, potentially increasing to two full days.
We welcome applications from well-qualified music graduates with relevant teaching qualifications and/or experience, and a proven track record in teaching pupils from primary to S6. The successful candidate will be passionate about developing the Bass Drum and Tenor Drum programme at The Edinburgh Academy. Teaching may take place across both sites of the Academy – Arboretum and Henderson Row.
The Academy sets a minimum charge for lessons and requires the VMT to pay a Facility Charge for resource use. As a self-employed VMT, the candidate will have a direct relationship with parents and will be responsible for invoicing them directly for tuition fees.
The VMT may have opportunities for group coaching and may be asked to support school rehearsals or competitions, such as CCF events, RSPBA and Non-RSPBA competitions, and other events. Compensation for such involvement will be at the hourly rate for that year.
Conditions of Appointment
The appointment will be subject to an interview, audition, satisfactory references, and verification of identity and qualifications.
Child Protection
The Edinburgh Academy is committed to safeguarding children and promoting their welfare. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and PVG Disclosure Scotland.
Equal Opportunities
The school is an Equal Opportunities employer and welcomes applications from qualified persons regardless of age, disability, gender, race, or sexual orientation.
