We have an exciting opportunity for a Environmental Technical Lead to join our team, acting as the lead environmental subject matter expert (SME) to support our design and delivery teams.
The focus will be on our Wanlip (Leicestershire) and Witches Oak (Nottinghamshire) sites. At Witches Oak, you’ll liaise with external stakeholders and our regulators to secure the planning application for the ion exchange development. You’ll also ensure biodiversity work is completed at Witches Oak WTW and the wetland.
At Wanlip you’ll develop and implement the biodiversity net gain plan working with our supply chain. You’ll be a key point of contact for the project team with the EA in relation to regulation and compliance.
Lead on environmental expertise across Capital Design and Delivery (CDD), driving sustainable design choices and ensuring projects consistently achieve the outcomes agreed with regulators, contracts, and key stakeholders.
What you’ll be doing
1. Leading and developing a small team of graduates and apprentices
2. Providing expert environmental advice to internal design and delivery teams
3. Building strong relationships with our supply chain to reinforce compliance with legal and contractual requirements
4. Managing consultants delivering environmental work packages, including monitoring progress, reviewing outputs, and ensuring delivery to time and budget
5. Engaging with key regulators such as the Environment Agency and Drinking Water Inspectorate, as well as internal stakeholders
6. Supporting the preparation, assessment, and delivery of environmental framework tenders

This is a key role where you’ll influence how environmental considerations shape our projects from design through to delivery. You’ll be working closely with internal teams, supply chain partners, and regulators to ensure high-quality, compliant, and sustainable outcomes.
What you’ll bring to the role
7. A strong technical background in a relevant environmental discipline
8. A good understanding of planning and consenting regimes, including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and biodiversity (BNG)
9. The ability (or willingness to develop knowledge) of Severn Trent’s internal environmental policies and drivers
10. Proven experience in project management, including budget control and leading projects
11. Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
