We have an exciting permanent static opportunity for an occupational therapist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. If you are passionate about patient care and supporting people with neurological impairments to optimise function and increase independence, this is the role for you.

This specialist role would suit an Occupational Therapist with a keen interest and clinical experience in neurology and neurosurgery, who would like the opportunity to continue developing their specialist clinical skills alongside developing their skills in clinical leadership and team management and development.

You will be based at Charing Cross Hospital within neurology and neurosurgery and also form part of the neuro outliers service across Charing Cross Hospital acute wards and ITU.

There may be opportunities that come up within the B7 neurosciences rotations including Acute/Hyper-acute stroke, Charing Cross Neuro Rehab Unit, Major Trauma, Neurology & Neurosurgery as well as Band 6 neuro rotations including Acute/Hyper-acute stroke, Charing Cross Neuro Rehab Unit, Community Neuro Rehab Team, Neurology & Neurosurgery.

Main duties of the job

1. To be responsible for the provision of highly specialised occupational therapy assessment, treatment and management of patients managed under the neurosciences pathways who present as in-patients with a wide variety of neurological management needs. These comprise acute, chronic, complex, disabling and life-limiting conditions.
2. To determine clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated and maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.
3. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management and those of more junior staff providing a comprehensive and appropriate occupational therapy service to neurosciences, stroke and neuro-trauma.
4. To provide leadership to the in-patient neurosciences, team alongside other band 7 occupational therapists and physiotherapists, and the Clinical therapy leads in neurosciences.
5. To undertake a significant clinical caseload working as an autonomous practitioner at a specialist level with other health professionals.
6. To be responsible for service development within the team, to implement policy and policy changes within the clinical area in partnership with MDT colleagues.
7. To deputise for the Clinical leads in the speciality.
8. To present a positive and inspirational role model for all team members.
9. To develop close working relationships and service links with the Clinical Team Lead Therapists
10. The job holder is required to work at weekends covering stroke weekend service as part of their contracted hours of work.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

11. Professional qualification in Occupational Therapy.
12. HPC registration
13. Evidence of Post-qualification training relevant to specialist area.

Desirable criteria

14. Member of RCOT Specialist Section – Neurology
15. Member of BAOT
16. Practice Placement course
17. Course in prescription of wheelchairs and seating.

Experience

Essential criteria

18. Specialist knowledge and application of OT assessments and interventions in neurological settings.
19. Application and interpretation of standardised cognitive assessments.
20. Specialist skills in the management and treatment of cognitive impairments following neurological injury
21. Significant relevant, recent clinical experience in the occupational therapy management of patients who have had a stroke, patients with long term neurological conditions requiring hospitalisation, anoxic brain injury and patients who have required neurosurgical treatments such as brain tumours.
22. Evidence of a broad base of clinical experience at Band 6 level
23. Recent, relevant work in an NHS environment
24. Significant experience of working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team and inter-agency working
25. Experience of multidisciplinary goal planning, development of care pathways and using outcome measures
26. Experience of organising and implementing training programmes for occupational therapists, MDT members, assistants and students
27. Experience of service development/change management
28. Experience in implementing evidence-based practice in speciality.

Desirable criteria

29. Previous Band 7 experience in relevant post
30. Leadership of an occupational therapy team
31. Experience of using clinical governance framework to monitor and improve quality of patient care
32. Clinical research experience
33. Experience of planning and managing service improvement activities
