Job Description: Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Clinical Pathology performs laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. The Pathologist Assistant supports the department by accurately accessioning surgical specimens, performing gross examination, preparing tissue for histology, assisting in intraoperative consultation (frozen section), and procuring tissue for research and specialized studies. The position is located at the Moses campus in the Surgical Pathology department.
Responsibilities
* Receiving specimens from the operating room and/or endoscopy suite.
* Clerical duties in the surgical pathology cutting room, including order entry and updates in the Epic Beaker Laboratory Information System.
* Organizing and prioritizing daily activities.
* Handling tissue fragments of uncomplicated samples.
* Gross examination and submission of sections from large, complicated surgical specimens for histologic diagnosis.
* Preparing and cutting tissue for frozen sections at 5 μ in a cryostat.
* Staining routine Hematoxylin & Eosin.
* Performing all routine quality control to ensure high laboratory standards.
* Processing pathology resident and attending requests to ensure completeness of work orders.
* Procurement of fresh tissue for research and specialized studies (cytogenetics, flow cytometry, EM, etc.).
* Organizing, storing, and retrieving surgical specimens until disposal.
* Dictating gross examinations using voice recognition.
* Managing specimen rotation and retrieval methods in the cutting room and storage facilities.
* Assisting in organ evisceration and brain removal for autopsy cases.
* Proper disposal of tissue and chemical waste in the cutting room and histology area.
* Performing any other departmental functions as required.
* Training other staff on cutting room procedures when necessary.
Qualifications
* State of New York License for Pathologist Assistant required.
* Master's degree required.
* Knowledge of histology and immunopathology procedures preferred, including cryogenic rotary microtome operations (Leica, Microm, Tissue‑Tek).
* Experience with Epic Beaker Laboratory Information System.
* Familiarity with laboratory equipment: electronic and manual scales, microwave, graduate cylinder, standard autopsy saw (Stryker), surgical instruments (scissors, scalpel blades and handles, probes, forceps), gross dissecting microscope, dictation equipment, cassette labeling machine.
* Knowledge of all surgical cutting room policies and procedures.
* Knowledge of all autopsy techniques and policies.
* Knowledge of proper operation of all equipment used in the surgical cutting room and autopsy suite.
