Our Geotechnical Engineers apply specialist skills to buildings and infrastructure projects across the globe. We offer clients a broad spectrum of expertise and consulting services in projects across transport, energy, water, resources, waste, land development, education, sports and leisure facilities, government/commercial and industrial buildings. We are a leading building and infrastructure design consultancy, delivering projects on schedule, on budget, and increasingly sustainably.
You will help deliver effective and professional services for a range of high‑profile clients. While you will have significant responsibility from day one, you will be supported to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills and experience.
You will work within a multi‑disciplinary office, supported by ground engineering professionals of all levels. There will be opportunities to develop a strong base in ground engineering, problem solve and develop designs, or specialise in areas such as numerical modelling, seismic, risk and resilience, or sustainability. You will focus on geotechnical aspects at all stages of the project lifecycle, including desk studies, ground investigation, analysis & design, carbon management, construction supervision & monitoring, and asset management. You will collaborate in multi‑disciplinary project teams and may work in other Arup offices or regions on occasion.
We have Graduate Geotechnical Engineering roles available in Birmingham, Nottingham, London, Leeds, Sheffield, Cardiff, Southampton, Bristol, Belfast and Newcastle. This role is based in the location specified in the job advert, with potential opportunities elsewhere as needed.
Responsibilities
• Deliver professional geotechnical services for varied and high‑profile clients across the project lifecycle.
• Contribute from day one and progressively take on more responsibility while developing your skills and experience.
• Collaborate in multi‑disciplinary project teams and support workload sharing across regions and offices.
• Develop skills in ground investigation planning, design and analysis, and assist with construction supervision and asset management.
Qualifications and Skills
* A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or similar subject, at 2.1 or above (predicted or attained).
* A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or postgraduate qualification in Geotechnics, Soil Mechanics, Seismic Engineering or related subject is desirable.
* Enthusiasm for a career in ground engineering, underpinned by knowledge and understanding of the sector and work.
* Excellent engineering knowledge of soil mechanics and soil‑structure interaction with a good understanding of sustainable development principles.
* Effective communication and teamwork with an analytical mindset.
* Ability to work on your own initiative and be proactive, seeking to improve existing ways of working.
* Understanding of applying Eurocodes in geotechnical and structural design.
* Aptitude for learning new technical and engineering software, including 3D design and digital automation.
* Experience with coding languages, finite element software, or digital design would be beneficial.
* Interest in developing a speciality through postgraduate or PhD studies is welcome.
