The opportunity
Darke & Taylor are a multi-award-winning Building Services Company with an established track record of providing job opportunities and long-term careers to people in the Building Services industry. Based just outside Oxford and operating in the South East and London, the Company has a healthy order book and is looking to recruit talented individuals to join its team. Due to the ongoing success of our Mechanical Department and several contract wins, we currently have a vacancy for a Mechanical Services Designer to join our in‑house Team.
THE ROLE:
As Mechanical Services Designer you will be responsible for producing mechanical services designs for projects from concept through to detailed design. You will work closely with senior engineers, project manager and commercial teams of both mechanical and electrical disciplines to deliver aligned, compliant and efficient designs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Produce mechanical services layouts, schematics and details to meet client requirements and regulations.
* Select mechanical plant and equipment, size ducts and pipework, carry out thermal calculations and load mapping.
* Use specialist software (e.g., AutoCAD MEP, Revit, BIM) to undertake thermal modelling and design coordination.
* Develop designs through RIBA Stages 2-4 (or higher) in line with project programme.
* Produce equipment schedules, technical submissions, and specification documents.
* Coordinate with other services and design disciplines to ensure clash‑free, integrated building services design.
* Provide support and mentoring to junior design engineers where applicable.
* Ensure designs comply with relevant UK standards/regulations (CIBSE, Building Regulations, etc).
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
* HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related discipline.
* Minimum 3 years’ experience in mechanical building services design.
* Proficiency in design software tools such as AutoCAD MEP, Revit (BIM), or equivalent.
* Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems, load calculations, plant sizing, duct/pipework design.
* Excellent communication and team‑working skills; ability to liaise effectively with clients, main contractors, and consultants.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to work to deadlines and project programmes.
