Consultant Obstetrician and Maternity Triage Lead
The successful candidate will work as part of the consultant obstetric team, contributing to the provision of high-quality consultant‑led maternity care across the service, including the labour ward, maternity triage, inpatient wards and obstetric clinics. They will participate in the consultant obstetric on‑call rota and play an active role in multidisciplinary working, clinical governance, service development, education and training within the department.
Main duties of the job
* Provide clinical and operational leadership for the maternity triage service.
* Support the strategic and operational development of maternity triage services, including patient flow, escalation pathways and workforce development.
* Align maternity triage operations with national maternity safety recommendations and refine the Birmingham Symptom‑specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS).
* Participate in the consultant obstetric on‑call rota and multidisciplinary collaboration.
* Support the development of ultrasound services within maternity triage, including one‑stop scan appointments, cervical length measurement and resident doctor ultrasound training.
* Contribute to service improvement, pathway development and innovation in urgent maternity care.
* Ensure compliance with clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration.
* MRCOG or appropriate specialist registration.
* CCT in O&G and on GMC's Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT from the interview date.
* MD/PhD (if applicable).
* ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or Labour Ward Lead.
* MOET or equivalent.
Clinical Experience
* Clinical training and experience in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology equivalent to a UK CCT.
* Experience and competence in obstetric ultrasound, including fetal growth and cervical length scans.
* Experience and competence performing external cephalic version (ECV).
Specific Additional Skills
* Experience in developing guidelines within obstetrics.
* Course or training in leadership skills.
Management Skills
* Attended management training course.
* Evidence of leading service improvement, pathway redesign or transformation projects within maternity services.
* Knowledge of finance and budgets.
* Evidence of working with the management team on QI initiatives.
Experience in Training, Audit and Research
* Demonstrable commitment to teaching and training undergraduates, junior doctors, and nursing and midwifery staff.
* Experience of clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
* Experience working in an MDT.
* Completed "Train the Trainers" course.
* Interest in leadership of clinical audit.
* Commitment to research and publication in peer‑reviewed journals.

* Ability to motivate staff, facilitate appropriate changes in clinical practice, and work effectively as part of a team.
