Overview
Amber Valley Borough Council is recruiting two full-time trainees (37 hours).
One trainee will enforce food safety and health and safety legal standards; the other will join the ICT Support Team. The traineeship is 2 - 3 years, with the possibility of a permanent role on successful completion and qualifications fully funded by the Council. Salary starts at Grade 4 (£26,824 - £28,598) and may increase on progression or appointment to a permanent role.

Responsibilities
* Visit and inspect businesses and commercial premises to enforce food safety and health and safety requirements.
* Undertake investigations and support businesses in meeting legal standards.
* Where standards are not met, employ sanctions through formal legal action (e.g., service of formal notices and prosecutions) once qualified.
* Develop knowledge in food safety, health and safety, legal processes, and public health protection; undertake investigations.
* Work with the Council’s Regulation Unit to support a wide variety of businesses within the district.
Qualifications and requirements
* Entry requirements for the Certificate of Higher Education in Food Safety and Food Legislation at Birmingham University (Level 5).
* Typically, candidates may have a City & Guilds plus several years' experience in catering and/or manufacturing, or a Level 3 (Intermediate) or Level 4 (Advanced) Food Hygiene Award from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (or equivalent).
* Confirmation that you will be accepted on the Birmingham University course; this will be required on the application.
* After successful completion, you will gain the Higher Certificate in Food Control (Level 5).
* Complete the Practical Food Inspection Course and obtain NEBOSH General Certificate – Health and Safety (distance learning).
* Full UK driving licence and access to a car for business use.
These Qualifications Will Be Fully Funded By The Council.
Person specification and skills
* Initiative, self-motivation, attention to detail, and an inquisitive mind.
* Excellent communication, report and letter writing skills; good timekeeping.
* Confidence speaking to people face to face and on the telephone; able to work alone in unfamiliar locations; assertive and persuasive in complex situations.
* Willingness to work out of hours when required.
* Physically capable of duties such as accessing premises, walking on uneven terrain, standing for extended periods, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders in varied weather conditions.
Physical fitness requirement: There is a genuine occupational requirement for the post holder to meet a certain level of physical fitness to safely and effectively carry out duties.
Start dates and progression
* Start date after qualification: January 2026.
* End of training may lead to full-time permanent employment for the right candidate, subject to successful completion of training and qualifications.
Other requirements
* Attending council offices for day-to-day training and instruction; most training cannot be completed at home.
