Job Overview
Perinatal mental health services have undergone a time of huge expansion nationally. Locally this has led to the development of a comprehensive perinatal mental health service for South Birmingham during Wave 1 of national funding. Wave 2 of this national funding has led to the creation of comprehensive services covering the Black Country, West Birmingham, North & East Birmingham and Solihull. All teams are multi‑disciplinary and comprise of specialist practitioners from relevant disciplines – psychology, nursing, OT, nursery nurses. These teams work alongside the well‑established existing 10‑bedded inpatient Mother and Baby Unit and its inreach/outreach team, which accepts referrals from across the country. The Mother and Baby Unit is now commissioned by the West Midlands Perinatal Provider Collaborative.
This post provides consultant cover for the West perinatal community team working alongside another Consultant. An important aspect of this post will be supporting the continued development of perinatal mental health community teams.
Responsibilities
1. Provide expert assessment and treatment of women with a wide range of mental health problems during pregnancy and the post‑partum period.
2. Collaborate with other providers of maternal mental health care within West Birmingham and the West Midlands region towards more integrated referral pathways and patterns of care.
3. Provide psychiatric leadership and clinical expertise to support the work of multi‑disciplinary teams. Contribute to the teaching and training of all professionals coming into contact with women during the perinatal period in relation to maternal mental health across the region.
4. Provide evidence‑based bio‑psychosocial interventions to promote recovery and social inclusion.
5. Responsible for the prescription of appropriate treatments, including drug treatments.
