Quarry Bank Medical Centre is a busy NHS GP surgery located on the High Street in Quarry Bank, Brierley Hill. We are committed to delivering efficient, high-quality primary care to our local patient population. We value a collaborative, supportive team environment where administrative and clinical staff work closely together to ensure safe, timely patient care.
Role Description
This is a temporary, on-site contract for a Medical Secretary / Referral Administrator based at Quarry Bank Medical Centre.
Unlike a general clerical or reception role, this position is strictly focused on managing the practice's clinical correspondence and workflow. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing routine and urgent referrals via the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS), tracking Advice & Guidance (A&G) requests, and managing time‑critical Two‑Week Wait (2WW) urgent cancer pathways. You will also provide light administrative and workflow support to the clinical team to ensure seamless day‑to‑day operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Referral Processing: Accurately type, format, and submit routine and private referral letters using the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS).
* Fast‑Track Pathways: Prioritise, process, and robustly track Two‑Week Wait (2WW) urgent referrals on the same day, ensuring safety protocols and confirmations are meticulously logged.
* Advice & Guidance (A&G): Submit consultant queries via e-RS and route responses back to the referring GP promptly.
* Administrative Support: Handle incoming third‑party queries regarding referral status from patients and secondary care, alongside light clinical admin tasks such as document matching or digital workflow support.
Qualifications & Experience
* Primary Care Experience: Previous experience working within an NHS general practice environment is essential.
* System Knowledge: Hands‑on experience using the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) and a major clinical system (such as EMIS Web) is highly preferred.
* Clinical Literacy: A strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical priority coding.
* Attention to Detail: Absolute accuracy in data entry and the ability to spot administrative errors under pressure.
* Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills for handling sensitive or urgent patient queries regarding specialist care.
