National Grid is hiring a Release Train Engineer on a permanent basis. This position is based in Warwick. You will also have the opportunity to work from our co-working space in London. This role is designated as hybrid, with an expectation of 4-5 days per month in the office. Requirements may vary based on business needs and company policy.


About the role

As Release Train Engineer, you'll manage and optimize the flow of value through the ART using various tools, such as the Program Kanban, along with establishing and communicating the annual calendars for Iterations and Program Increments (PIs). You'll facilitate PI Planning readiness by fostering a Continuous Exploration process that drives the synthesis of a Vision, a Roadmap, and Backlogs, and through Pre- and Post-PI Planning events, as well as facilitating the PI planning event.

You'll also assist in tracking the execution of features and capabilities, facilitate the periodic synchronization events, including the ART sync, assist with economic decision‑making by facilitating feature and capability estimation by teams and the roll‑up to Epics, where necessary. You'll work with Product and Solution Management, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to help ensure strategy and execution alignment and improve the flow of value through value streams by improving and assessing the practices associated with DevOps and Release on Demand in the Continuous Delivery Pipeline.


What you'll do

* Lead and coordinate Agile Release Train (ART) activities to ensure successful planning, execution, and delivery of value
* Facilitate Program Increment (PI) planning, iteration planning, and key ART ceremonies to drive alignment and transparency across teams
* Act as a servant leader and coach for Agile teams, promoting best practices, continuous improvement, and adherence to SAFe principles
* Manage dependencies, risks, and impediments across teams and stakeholders, ensuring timely resolution and smooth delivery
* Own and manage the full product lifecycle (ideation to retirement), ensuring alignment with customer needs and business objectives
* Act as product owner/champion, defining product vision, roadmap, and backlog priorities
* Leverage market research, user feedback, and data insights to shape product strategy, positioning, and enhancements
* Lead product development, testing, launches, and ongoing improvements, including end‑of‑life planning
* Drive adoption of methods, tools, and best practices; contribute to and uphold organizational standards
* Establish and manage performance metrics, using data to inform decisions and improve outcomes
* Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships; facilitate communication, alignment, and decision‑making
* Lead change management initiatives, ensuring smooth adoption of new products, processes, and capabilities
* Promote knowledge sharing and implement knowledge management practices across teams
* Support organizational capability development through continuous improvement initiatives and assessments
* Oversee release and deployment processes, including planning, risk management, and post‑release evaluation


About you

* Degree‑level qualification, preferably in an analytical or business‑oriented discipline like information systems or industrial engineering, alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training
* Good leadership, relationship, communication, and presentation skills combined with a good track record of delivery.
* Experience of strategic investment and product planning ensuring alignment with business strategy and priorities
* Excellent understanding of the business area within which they are operating
* Good understanding of current and emerging product methods, agile methodologies, and trends
* Experience of working within a heavily matrixed organisation, with the ability to drive for results
* Good understanding of financial management, benefits management and realisation linked to business results.
