We are leading the digital transformation of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and DWP Digital. The area is at the forefront of delivering the Department's transformation strategies, and we need Data Engineers to help us succeed. Data plays a crucial role in driving decision making, improving outcomes for citizens, and delivering value quickly on critical data products and services that impact millions of lives. In this role, you will be part of the Data Platforms and Operations team within the Data & Analytics function. The team is structured into data domain teams to collaborate closely and deliver the right data to users. Our teams build and maintain cloud data platforms powering the Department's data capabilities, partnering with DWP business lines to deliver reliable, discoverable, governed, high-quality data.
Responsibilities
As an Apprentice Data Engineer, you will:
* Help collect upstream user technical requirements for platform migrations and configuration.
* Identify and provide technical patterns and guidance, assist in building data engineering capability, and ensure data products and pipelines are built using appropriate techniques for ingesting, preparing, storing, and using data.
* Work with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Informatica, covering Data Integration (ETL/ELT), Data Quality, Data Catalogue, Data Virtualisation, and Visualization technologies.
* Develop knowledge and apply established engineering standards across multiple platforms and toolsets, helping to implement and keep standards up to date and ensuring adherence.
Qualifications and Eligibility
You must meet the following eligibility criteria and qualifications to be considered:
* Must be eligible to work in the UK (e.g., right to live and work in the UK).
* Not be in full-time education or undertaking another apprenticeship by the start date.
* Must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level in a similar subject.
* Hold 5 GCSEs including Maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or above.
* One of the following qualifications or equivalent work experience:
o Two A levels in Computer Science, IT, Maths, Data Engineering, Analytics, or Statistics (or similar).
o Level 3 apprenticeship in a related subject (e.g., Computer Science, IT, Maths, Data Engineering, Analytics, Statistics, digital aligned apprenticeships).
o International Baccalaureate at Level 3 in a related subject.
o BTEC Extended Diploma in a related subject.
o Experience with programming languages (such as Python).
o Level 4 Data Analyst qualification.
* Evidence of willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; good time management; and effective communication.
Additional Information
The duration of the apprenticeship programme is typically 21 months. You will be supported by your line manager, skills coach, and the engineering community, as well as fellow apprentices. This is a strong opportunity to build a software engineering career at DWP and become a highly skilled tech professional. If applying part-time, you must work a minimum of 30 hours per week as this role combines work and study.
