HSE Compliance Manager – BT Group

Location: Manchester, England, United Kingdom


Why this job matters

BT’s property estate (around 8 000 sites across the UK) is diverse and geographically spread, presenting various challenges and HSE risks for those working in these environments and the broader community.

This role is pivotal in managing hazardous substances such as Asbestos, Legionella, Radon, and overseeing environmental and general Health & Safety compliance to ensure we meet our legal obligations, safeguard colleague safety, and support continuous performance improvement.

The role holder proactively engages with internal and external stakeholders, including strategic alliance partners, to manage risks effectively, delivering high‑risk HSE programmes and continuously identifying improvement opportunities.

They also ensure effective management of HSE risks presented through building use and work activities, providing assurance that required standards are met.


What You’ll Be Doing

* Governance and Oversight: Leading the development and implementation of HSE compliance frameworks, including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
* System Management: Build and manage the HSE management system to form the foundation of effective governance across all HSE compliance workstreams.
* Programme Delivery: Drive compliance assurance of high‑risk HSE programmes such as Radon, Legionella, Flat Roofs, Waste Water, Asbestos and Environmental management across BT’s property estate.
* Data and MI Utilisation: Use management information to proactively identify risks and trends, and inform strategic decision‑making.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal teams, strategic alliance partners (e.g. CBRE, HSE consultants) and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
* Policy and Process Development: Ensure all HSE policies and procedures are current, effective and aligned with statutory and business requirements.
* Enhancing Physical & Financial Safety / BT’s Safety Culture: Lead the integration of HSE into transformational and operational strategies across the organisation; promote a safety‑first culture through training, communication and continuous improvement initiatives.


You’ll Have The Following Skills And Experience

* Identifying solutions – able to develop straightforward solutions to improve HSE management.
* Give specialised advice – provide recommendations based on expertise proactively and on request.
* Stakeholder engagement – effectively engage with external and internal stakeholders to drive performance and raise awareness of waste and natural environment controls.
* Understanding of regulatory framework – good understanding and application of all relevant regulatory and assurance frameworks, including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
* Contract and supplier management – drive strategic partners to support the delivery of HSE objectives.
* Professional qualifications – hold a relevant professional level 6 qualification in safety (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma) and full membership with a recognised professional body (IOSH). Environmental related qualification such as IEMA Certificate desirable.
