Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting Structures team in Scotland. We have design hubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Motherwell, Perth, and Aberdeen, together with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn and Huntly.
Our Amey Consulting Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across Scotland with cumulative values in excess of £1bn. Amey manages the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, plus other major road, bridge and transport projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities and established contractors across the country.
Role
As a Lead Senior Engineer you provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Civil schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers.
Responsibilities
* Lead a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
* Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
* Oversee the actions of junior staff undertaking similar tasks and take responsibility for their actions.
* Control budgets and manage the costs associated with the production of deliverables, ensuring commercial success for projects within the portfolio.
* Engage with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
* Significantly contribute to the preparation of bids and the general work‑winning function.
* Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.
Desired Qualifications
* Developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, typically gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent.
* Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions, work unsupervised and supervise junior members on similar tasks.
* Experienced in managing health, safety and welfare on projects (e.g., Amey’s Integrated Management System and CDM Regulations).
* Capable of acting as day‑to‑day main engineering contact for a project, e.g., Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Network Rail schemes.
* Knowledge, understanding and experience of design and specification processes with ability to advise others.
* Highly experienced with relevant software and analytical tools; capable of checking work produced by others.
* Good understanding of CDM and risk assessment; experienced in managing and communicating hazards and risks.
* Capable of acting as Principal Designer for appropriate projects.
* Strong supervisory and people‑management skills; capable of managing a medium‑sized, locally based single‑discipline technical team.
* Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
