Overview
We are seeking full-time consultants in anaesthesia (with or without an interest in critical care or obstetrics) to join The Rotherham Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will work alongside the existing team of 31 consultants and 19 Associate Specialists, specialty doctors and clinical fellows as well as 12 doctors in training from Health Education England (HEE). The Anaesthetic and critical care department serves a modern and recently expanded theatre and day surgery complex with adjacent ITU and HDU facilities. The department has an excellent reputation and enthusiasm for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and would welcome applicants with a teaching interest. The Trust has Associate Teaching Hospital status within the University of Sheffield Medical School.

Responsibilities
Main duties include: working in surgical specialties in the Trust (general surgery including laparoscopic colorectal surgery, orthopaedics, Obs & Gynae, urology, ENT, maxillofacial, breast surgery and ophthalmology); managing a busy pre-operative assessment service including cardiopulmonary exercise testing; specialising in day case surgery and regional anaesthesia. The critical care unit comprises 6 funded ITU beds and 8 funded HDU beds, with consultants having special interests in critical care medicine. There are arrangements for cross-coverage between Critical Care and General Anaesthesia teams. Teaching and research opportunities are available; one consultant is a professor with active research and the department contributes to prominent trials. The Trust supports opportunities for quality improvement projects.
Key duties also include participating in the department’s teaching and training activities, involvement in SPA (Supporting Professional Activities), and contributing to service development and governance. The post holder will participate in the on-call rota for out-of-hours emergencies and may have additional SPA roles aligned with interests and departmental needs. The post is designed to support a departmental restructure to separate ITU and General rotas over time.
On Call, SPA, Teaching, and Study
The on-call arrangement is Category A with a pay supplement; 1.0 PA per week on average for on-call duties, plus SPA activities such as CPD, appraisal, revalidation, audit, governance, education and training. Teaching and supervision of junior staff and medical students is expected, and the post-holder may be named in contracts for junior staff as responsible for their training. The appointee is encouraged to participate in professional continuing medical education and study leave is supported with potential Trust funding or assistance through the Study Leave Committee.
Professional Requirements
Appointees are expected to maintain professional development and participate in annual appraisal and mandatory training as stipulated by the Trust. The post requires participation in CPD and revalidation processes and may involve supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff where appropriate.
Qualifications and Experience
* Essential: Full GMC registration and licence to practise.
* Essential: Eligibility to be included on the Specialist Register (CCT expected within 6 months of interview) or evidence of CESR submission within 6 months of obtaining Specialist Registration via CESR.
* Essential: MBBS or equivalent qualification; FRCA or equivalent; for Critical Care interest, FFICM by examination and/or CCT in Critical Care must be confirmed.
* Desirable: Higher Medical Degree; experience in ARCP processes or equivalent; subspecialty training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) for ITU posts.
Experience and skills: trained in research methodology; committed to evidence-based practice; ability to conduct and implement audits; and demonstrated teaching and training capability. Desirable attributes include teaching qualifications or instructor status (e.g., ATLS, APLS) and management skills such as effective teamwork, project planning, and knowledge of NHS systems.
