Job Overview University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Job Title : Senior Research Fellow

Start Date : 5th August 2026

Contract Type : Fixed term

Duration : 12 months

Purpose : Training contract. This post is appointed on a fixed‑term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.

Main Duties We are looking for an enthusiastic senior resident (ST3+) interested in Neurology to augment our clinical and research teams. Responsibilities include:

Carry out lumbar punctures to a high standard.

Act as sub-investigator for phase 1–4 drug trials in neurodegeneration.

Participate in academic trials looking at care for people with neurodegenerative disease.

Engage in on‑call inpatient work (neurology, stroke, neurosurgery, and spinal medicine).

Contribute to audit and educational meetings within the department.

Publish research and present at international conferences.

Training and Development Successful candidates will have access to the Wessex Research Fellow Training Programme, associate PI training schemes, and support to carry out their own research.

Qualifications Essential :

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.

GMC registration with a licence to practise.

MRCP or equivalent.

Completed Foundation Programme and intermediate medical training programme or equivalent.

Additional experience in Neurology.

Ability to apply sound clinical judgement.

Desirable :

Postgraduate BSc or other higher degrees.

Undergraduate awards.

GCP training.

Advanced life support qualification.

Previous experience in Neurology at ST 3 level.

Experience of neurology outpatient clinics.

Statistical or data‑based research experience.

Aptitudes & Skills

Work effectively in multi‑professional teams.

Understanding of equality and diversity.

Excellent communication and liaison skills.

Good organisational skills, ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.

Calm, compassionate, efficient in changing circumstances.

Experience teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Capable of performing lumbar puncture independently to a high standard.
