Urgent and Emergency Care Pharmacy Technician – Band 4 to 5 Progression
The closing date is 27 May 2026. This permanent position is available at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital or William Harvey Hospital (location will be confirmed during interview).
This fast‑paced, multi‑disciplinary environment places patient safety at the forefront. The role involves providing a patient‑focused medicines management service and regularly teaching other clinicians and healthcare professionals in the emergency department.
Main Duties
* Complete detailed medication histories using multiple sources to reconcile with current inpatient medications and intervene where appropriate.
* Administer intravenous and oral medications within scope of practice (training will be provided).
* Counsel patients on new or changed medications to promote compliance.
* Aid doctors and nurses with medication queries.
* Evaluate suitability of patient medications for use in the hospital setting.
* Participate in discharge planning with ward staff and other healthcare professionals in secondary and primary care.
* Check accuracy of dispensed items in the main hospital dispensary or satellite pharmacy within the acute medicines unit.
* Carry out audits to ensure procedures are followed.
Qualifications and Training
* NVQ in Pharmacy Services Level 3 with BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science underpinning knowledge or equivalent.
* Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
* National accredited checking qualification or evidence of competence.
* Medicines Optimisation Programme or equivalent evidence of competence.
Clinical Skills and Experience
* Knowledge of commonly used medicines.
* Experience of counselling patients on medication.
* Experience of working within a hospital pharmacy.
Governance
* Experience of participating in audits.
* Awareness of and adherence to the Trust's Vision, Mission and Values.
* Knowledge of the audit cycle.
* Experience of writing action plans.
* Member of APTUK.
Personal and Professional Attributes
* Basic understanding of pharmacy practice.
* Good communication skills – verbal, written and electronic.
* Negotiation skills, good interpersonal skills, effective team player.
* Strong analytical skills – able to access and abstract data from relevant and sometimes complex sources.
* Ability to appraise options and make clear decisions.
* IT skills in word processing, database and spreadsheet packages.
* Baseline management skills – can prioritise work and organise own workload as well as that of junior pharmacy staff.
* Knowledge of JAC system for dispensing, ordering, stock maintenance, etc.
* Utilising electronic systems to access patient records.
* Basic understanding of hospital pharmacy practice.

Compensation
£28,392 – £31,157 per year. Progress to band 5 on competency completion.
