Tasks
The key responsibilities and duties of the Toolmaker include, but are not limited to:
* Operate both manual and CNC machine tools, including milling machines, lathes, and grinders, as well as hand tools
* Use a wide variety of precision measuring instruments
* Responsible for the manufacture, service, and repair of tools, assembly jigs, and fixtures during the development of new products and support of existing products
* Manufacture of tools against drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions
* Provide advice on tooling design and manufacture for tools used in Assembly, Machining, Plating, and NDT operations
* Collaborate with Engineering, Production, and other team members to develop and improve tooling solutions
* Maintain and repair existing production tools
* Liaise with Engineering and Production personnel to assist in reviewing/checking processes and help the Engineering design team on tool design
* Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to tool performance and quality
* Manufacture tooling to assist in the assembly and testing of prototypes
Requirements
The ideal candidate should meet the following requirements:
* Engineering Apprenticeship preferred but not essential
* Minimum GCSE-level education or equivalent
* Solid workshop experience essential; tool room and aerospace background preferred
* Skilled in CNC, lathes, milling, grinding, and general machining
* Good understanding of machining, materials, and toolroom practices (City & Guilds standard or similar)
* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specs
* Familiarity with welding methods (Gas, MIG, TIG, Stick) is a plus
* Experience with sheet metal fabrication
* Knowledge of various materials (e.g., steel, aluminum, nickel, brass, nylon)
* Team player with strong communication skills
* Able to work independently and meet tight deadlines
* Familiar with 5S / LEAN practices
* Shift work may be required
